Richards reveals he downed TEN drinks the night before Man City clash – then told Pellegrini he had hamstring injury | The Sun
MICAH RICHARDS has revealed the time that he necked TEN drinks just hours before a game.
The former Man City star tried to wriggle his way out of playing by faking an injury after feeling the effects of the night before.
During his days with the Cityzens Richards raided the hotel mini bar the evening before a match when he wasn’t expecting to play after returning from an injury.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, he said: “I'd just got back in the squad with (Manuel) Pellegrini and you pretty much know if you're going to be left out,
“You're sort of travelling if anyone gets injured. So I remember travelling somewhere, can't remember where we were travelling to.
“I know I'm not playing, just come back from injury, just got back into it. So we get back to the hotel, and normally they take out all your alcohol of the fridge.

“Because I was probably a late shout for the squad, I've got all the alcohol in my fridge. So I'm thinking ‘I've just come back from injury, I'm not going to be playing, I'll have one’.
“One turns to two, two turns to three, before you know it I'm ten drinks down!”
And Richards almost instantly regretted his mistake when he was told he was playing in the morning.
“I get a call in the morning, someone's injured. I've never been so nervous in my life!” He explained.

“And people don't really know this, you have a relationship with the doctor, the physios and then a different relationship with the manager. So, the doctor and physio always try to protect you if they can.
“The manager has a conversation ‘are you playing or not playing?’ So I was just like to the manager ‘I'm not ready boss, my hamstring's not right’,
“Or this, that and the other, but really I've told the doc and the physio ‘I've been steaming last night, you're going to have to make up an excuse, I can't be in the squad, I just can't do it’.
“And luckily the other sub went onto the bench and ended up going on and I didn't have to appear, but that's another true story.”
