American Peter Wright beats namesake as darts fans fall in love with new hero

Stowe Buntz produced a stunning performance to defeat two-time world Champion Peter Wright on his Grand Slam of Darts debut.

Buntz, who has been dubbed the 'American Peter Wright' thanks in part to his similar flamboyant attire, destroyed the actual Wright, beating his idol 5-1 in Wolverhampton. And the 44-year-old was clearly emotional following his impressive win.

"I was nervous," said Buntz told Sky Sports in the immediate aftermath of his debut win. "I'm sorry if I didn't show it! Again, I don't know what to say. Thank you to the crowd. I was nervous, I was able to find a triple and hit it consistently and catch him out so I was lucky."

Buntz was then asked what it meant to him to be able to defeat a player of Wright's calibre. "Oh it's phenomenal," replied Buntz. "Peter Wright, two-time world champion, who doesn't want be that guy.

"Hence the attire [pointing out his colourful shirt]. To play one of my idols, it's like playing Michael Jordan if you're a basketball fan. So I was able to do it an succeed. I don't know what they [his friends and family] will be thinking. I'm sure phone, my messenger is going to be blowing up but I'm going to try and not pay attention to it."
