When Jo Cotton (Vicki Michelle) left EastEnders having pocketed £50,000 of Kathy Beale’s (Gillian Taylforth) hard earned savings, viewers were left wondering if this was the last they’d see of Rocky Cotton’s (Brian Conley) scheming ex-wife.
Her final scenes saw her on the phone to a mystery person, explaining that she’d ‘got what she wanted’ but that there was ‘plenty more for the taking’.
This left us wondering if Jo would come back to Albert Square to cause even more drama, and we were quick to get the lowdown from actress Vicki Michelle at the Inside Soap Awards.
‘I think they’ve left it open,’ she told Metro.co.uk. ‘That was the thing. And hopefully, talk soon! That would be great.’
The reaction among fans to Jo’s arrival was huge, and didn’t go unnoticed by Vicki herself, who loved how much people took the character into their hearts.
‘I loved it. People were ringing me up saying “Oh my god, we love this character!”’ She explained.
‘And the funny thing is that when you’re doing EastEnders, people defend you. I’m having a go at Rocky and then a fan will say “Oh, she was really mean to Rocky”, and then you’ll get another fan going “Well, what do you expect? He walked out on her 25 years ago! She didn’t know whether he was dead or alive!”
‘So, I think that’s the amazing thing about EastEnders, that people take on the characters.’
Jo’s rivalry with Kathy ultimately led to an epic showdown in the Queen Vic on Kathy’s wedding day to Rocky, who had just found out that his divorce to Jo hadn’t actually gone through.
During those scenes, Vicki had some incredible one-liners to deliver, including one which she remembers particularly fondly.
‘Some of the dialogue… To Gilly, who’s a mate – and I found this quite difficult to deliver to her – but I had a line that was absolutely brilliant, and it was, “You love, are the mushroom on a plate of full English that no one wants.”
‘How good is that line? But to say it without laughing was really hard, especially to Gilly!’
Whether or not Jo is set to return remains to be seen, but with Brian Conley bowing out of his role as Rocky Cotton, we can’t help but wonder if she will play a part in his exit…
Could Jo go against her word and report Rocky to the police for bigamy, getting him sent down? Or could Rocky and Jo rekindle their romance and run off into the sunset? We’ll have to wait and see…
