Coronation Street cast mourn loss of charming soap legend
Coronation Street: Evelyn and Cassie
Reports suggest Coronation Street’s cast are grieving the loss of a “wonderful” writer behind some of the ITV soap’s biggest storylines.
Writer John Stevenson has died at the age of 86 after being behind some of soap’s most memorable moments.
Several stars have penned heartfelt tributes to him as they mourn the loss of the “charming” soap icon.
John worked on the soap for 40 years, contributing to 447 episodes, the last of which aired in 2006.
He was behind Mike Baldwin’s (played by Johnny Briggs) dementia battle and many more memorable moments.

Coronation Street legend Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt on and off from 1985 to 2005, was among those to pay tribute to him, as reported by The Sun.
After describing him as the “talismanic writer of many an episode of the halcyon years of Coronation Street,” he continued: “From a little knowing wink to a rip-roaring belly laugh, John was a craftsman of TV humour.
“His like will never be seen again in TV it seems. He always had kind words for me throughout my tenure there and wrote some of my favourite episodes ever.
“Rest well John with a wry smile of contentment x.” (sic)

Janet Johnson added: “What lovely words Sean. He was indeed a wonderful writer, his scripts were always a joy to read.”
More tributes have since poured in, with @DaranLittle writing: “Just heard that John Stevenson has died.

The creator of Mike Baldwin, Alec Gilroy, Jack Duckworth, Fred Elliott, Ashley Peacock and so many others. Taught me so much.
“John asked me to write his obit when it was his time but I can’t find any of the notes he sent because I’ve moved house!
“Oh John, my dear friend, dad figure… once voted the Scriptwriters Scriptwriter by his peers. The best of the best. A true comic icon.”
Peter Irving responded: “Sad news.”
In 2005, John was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards.
He also wrote for several other programmes such as Heartbeat and The Grimleys.
