Lidl has become notorious in recent years for shutting on Boxing Day, at a time when many retailers stay open to capitalise on the bank holiday’s famous sales.
This comes after the supermarket teamed up with sustainable fashion app to let customers to borrow a festive sweater for as little as £2.
Lidl’s 2023 Christmas jumper will be available to rent on the site, as well as its 2020, 2021 and 2022 offerings – with all profits going to charity.
The Lidl x By Rotation collection will also offer three festive jumpers inspired by Christmas pop icons Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis and Elton John.
The Christmas jumper retail service may take the pressure off people heading to multiple festive parties, or those who can’t afford to splash out on one but don’t want to feel left out.
By Rotation is a peer-to-peer fashion rental app that was launched in 2019 in a bid to challenge over-consumption habits and prolong the life cycle of garments already in circulation.
And its collaboration with Lidl gives customers the opportunity to snap up their Christmas jumper rental slots for only £2 each. All profits from the jumpers will go to the NSPCC.
Eshita Kabra, By Rotation’s founder and CEO, said: ‘By Rotation is thrilled to partner with Lidl this festive season by adding Lidl’s Christmas jumpers to our shared wardrobe on the app.

‘With Christmas being one of the top occasions of the year when the demand for purchasing single-wear outfits skyrockets, renting a festive jumper for your holiday season plans is a great way to leave a positive impact on the planet and also save money!’
For this year’s collection, Lidl has also collaborated with Lydia Bolton, a specialist in slow fashion – which is the opposite of fast fashion and takes an ethical and sustainable approach to producing clothes.
Available exclusively on By Rotation, Lydia has come up with three bespoke Lidl jumpers inspired by pop culture Christmas icons Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis and Elton John. The sustainable limited edition jumpers are made from up-cycled textiles, transformed into this season’s must have item.
The Carey jumper is ‘all you’ll want for Christmas’ this year, as it comes in a festive red colour with an off-the-shoulder cut and big bows.
Meanwhile, The Lewis jumper combines gold, glamour and tassels to give you a seriously bling-filled Christmas.
