Linda Nolans missed cancer sign as sister issues warning to save others

Linda Nolan: ‘Who knows how long we’ve got left but make most of that time’

Linda Nolan’s first battle with breast cancer wasn’t caught early as she didn’t think anything of her misshapen breast at the time, her sister Maureen Nolan told Express.co.uk.

The Nolans singer was first diagnosed with cancer in 2005, about a year after noticing a difference in her breasts.

As she didn’t have a lump at the time, Maureen, 69, said her sister believed there wasn’t anything to be worried about.

Now, as Linda battles incurable cancer, the Calendar Girls star expressed the importance of getting checked early.

Maureen said: “The first time she had breast cancer, she didn’t have a lump, she had a misshapen sort of breast and she left it for quite a while because she thought, ‘Well I haven’t got a lump’.

“It’s not necessarily just a lump, it can be a nipple that can look weird or a misshaped breast compared to the other one.

“If you need to go [and get checked] then go, if it’s nothing it’s nothing, but if it’s something, you’ve caught it early.”

After being diagnosed with breast cancer the first time, Linda underwent a single mastectomy as part of her treatment.

The former singer faced more heartache in 2017 when she was diagnosed with a form of incurable secondary cancer in her hip.

Three years later, she was told it had spread to her liver before doctors found two sizable tumours surrounded by smaller ones in her brain earlier this year.

For now, the tumours are at bay and Linda vows to stay positive and continue with her life while she can.

Maureen said of her inspirational sister: “She is doing great.

“She keeps going, obviously she has her days, she’s bound to, isn’t she?

“They’re keeping it all at bay at the moment, the chemo and stuff so let’s hope that continues.”

Having had sisters Linda, Anne, Coleen and the late Bernie all battle with the disease, Maureen admits she does worry about her health, but ensures she checks herself regularly and encourages others to do the same if concerned.

“I try to check myself and just try and get on with my life, enjoy my life. That’s the message from us,” she added.
