I'm a hair expert – why wearing your locks down when you sleep is actually DAMAGING them | The Sun
A HAIR expert has explained how you're doing more damage to your hair just by wearing it down when you sleep.
Queer Eye star and hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness knows a few things about haircare – so much so that he's even the proud owner of his own hair product line, JVN Hair.
And in a video on TikTok, he explained how wearing your hair down while you sleep creates an effect similar to when you style it with heat.
"If you're sleeping with your hair down, you're getting your hair trapped between your body heat, the pillow…" he began.
"You know how sometimes you wake up and it's really hot and you're like, 'Oooh, it's steamy in here'.
"That is like keeping a 100 degree flat iron pressed on your ends."

He added that due to the fact that hair only grows around half an inch a month, most people's ends can be two to three years old.
"So sleeping with hair for eight hours a night pressed against the warmth of your body heat and the friction of your sheets, it just creates rubbing, friction, tension," he continued.
"And that ultimately just makes your ends disintegrate or just break off because there's just too much heat and friction".
"Why you need to stop sleeping with your hair down!" he captioned the video.

People were quick to comment on his revelation, with one writing: "i trust him with my life!"
"I learned this from your appearance on another podcast and I took it to heart," another said.
"I had never really slept with my hair up but I started!"
"Not me rolling out of my scrolling coma to tie my hair up," a third commented.
"But I thought if you pull it back then your hair breaks. What am I supposed to do?" another asked.
Jonathan then responded in another video, as he said: "Take your hair and loosely put it on top of your head.
"You want to use a silk scrunchie to secure it."
He said that he likes to twist his hair, put in a loose bun and secure with a silk scrunchie.
"And then you just want to pull the hairline out so you don't have tension here," he went on to explain.
"You want to make sure you're not putting it up really tight because that can create tension around the hairline which can lead to traction alopecia or breakage around the hairline.
"So we don't want tight, tight, tight, we want very loose."

Jonathan added that by tying your hair up loosely, it keeps the most fragile part of the hair – the ends – "up and away from the body heat".
"You're also not going to have your hair tangle so much, your blow dries are going to last longer, your hair's going to be shinier, happier and just all over looking better," he concluded.
