Craig Doyle revealed Ant and Dec knew their 1994 Christmas song was “embarrassing” at the time – after an old clip of them performing it went viral.

The 53 year old This Morning presenter recalled on Tuesday’s show how he had travelled to Paris with the lovable Geordie duo around the time their festive track Eternal Love was released. And while the resurfaced clip of them performing the single left Ant and Dec cringing this week, Craig revealed how even at the time the pair were not convinced by the song.

The old footage of the 19 year old Geordie pair – who went under the names of their Byker Grove characters PJ and Duncan – showed them performing Eternal Love live on ITV's This Morning in 1994. At the weekend, almost 30 years later, the clip of the awkward performance went viral after being shared on Instagram.

On Tuesday’s episode of This Morning, as the old clip was shown, Craig revealed: “I was working on a kids’ show actually when they released that single and I went on a tour with them, we went over to Paris as a little feature and I think they knew how embarrassing that song was at the time. I think they knew.”

Co-host Josie Gibson said: “They’ve always been famous, ever since they were younger, and you can see why, they are lovely, lovely guys."

Craig replied: “That’s it, you see. They’re such lovely blokes you just sort of laugh along with them.”

The resurfaced clip left fans and celebrity friends in fits of laughter after it went viral. With lyrics including lines like 'I made you a necklace from a chain of shells' and 'The fire burning our bodies yearning, round and round the wheel of loves are turning', it is little wonder Ant and Dec were left cringing.

The caption on the post said the clip was ‘difficult to watch’ and the official Ant and Dec Instagram account commented: "Hahahaha!! It’s a more difficult watch for us. X."

Stacey Dooley meanwhile wrote: "I’ve watched approx 100 times." Chloe Madeley added: "Made my year. Also Why isn’t mum on the credits with dad? Savage from@Granada."

Fans were left cracking up too. One wrote: "I made you a necklace from a chain of shells. If that’s not poetry I’m not sure what is."

A second said: "I can’t deal with Ant’s awful attempt at body popping". A third aded: "The screaming fans behind the window make it."

A fourth wrote: "Oh dear God. I'm torn.. Is the singing or the dancing worse… Or the lyrics… I thought "let's get ready to rumble" was their only song. I wish I hadn't found out the truth."

A fifth added: "I’d love to see their reaction to watching this now."

The clip comes as the TV presenting duo finished filming for this year's I'm A Celebrity, which saw Made In Chelsea star Sam Thompson crowned as the King of the Jungle. He beat former boxer Tony Bellew and ex UKIP leader Nigel Farage into second and third place on this year’s series of the ITV show.
