Zoe Ball returned to her BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show on Tuesday after taking two days off on Friday and Monday due to covid. Opening her latest show, the 53-year-old apologised for her absence but excitedly told listeners that “normal service had been resumed” after her co-presenter Gaby Logan covered for her.

She went on to say: “Sending love to anyone who’s a bit sniffly, anyone who has got the old Covid.” As the show went on, Zoe told listeners she was feeling “a bit lopsided” due to suffering from “squeaky ears” which she believes is a post-symptom.

Speaking to her team in the studio, she asked them: “Do you ever get that thing when you get a cold and you get a squeaky ear?” After her team seemed puzzled, she added: “No? When you’re tired do you get a squeaky eye? No?”

The host’s co-star Richie Anderson cheekily replied: “Might just be you Zoe,” to which she replied, laughing: “It is, the jingle bells are falling off, that’s what’s happened.” Later on in the programme, Zoe mentioned her “odd” symptoms again, adding of her eye: “It’s only the right eye, but when I’m a bit tired and run down, my eye squeaks.

“It’s quite loud, so other people can hear it, it’s a bit odd.” While her co-stars couldn’t relate, Zoe was thankful that some listeners had messaged in to say they had experienced the same thing.

As she continued to read out the messages, she discovered one from a doctor who told her “you cannot get snotty lug holes” from a cold.

Puzzled by his words, Zoe asked: “I know but then why can’t you hear properly when you have a cold Doctor Wayne? I do understand what he’s saying, nose and throat, all the phlegm, but why do your ears get blocked? If Doctor Wayne doesn’t have the answer, we’ll ask the elves.

Don’t Miss… According to the National Institutes of Health, sensory symptoms, including loss of taste and smell, can sometimes come with COVID-19. Hearing and balance symptoms associated with the disease have also been reported in past studies.

On her show on Thursday, Zoe had a croaky voice and told listeners that despite having a cold, she was still feeling “festive”. The presenter and her co-star had also excitedly discussed plans for their Christmas party on Friday, which she didn’t end up attending.
