The former Doctor Who actress stars in Julia Donaldson’s Tabby McTat, which will be aired on Christmas Day.

She also revealed she had already been in training for the role, as the book was a favourite bedtime story for her children.

The endearing tale revolves around a small cat named Tabby (Sope Dirisu) and his owner, Fred (Rob Brydon), who become separated and then hunt across London to find one another.

While he is on his travels he falls in love and begins a family with Sock (Susan Wokoma). It is based on the book written by Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Jodie said she is so enthusiastic for the story she will be making her family watch it: “I will be incredibly narcissistic and make everyone sit down and listen to me. That will be their highlight of Christmas Day.”

She continued: “Every Christmas I’ve watched Julia’s animations. I’m pinching myself that I get to narrate one.

“I’m a fan of this story and know it quite well. I’ve been reading it at bedtime for quite a while so I’ve had quite a lot of practice.”

The Yorkshire-born star lives in London with fellow actor husband Christian Contreras and their two children, eight and one.

The couple married when Jodie was 26 in Arizona in 2008.

They met five years previously when studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Christian’s acting credits include Zero Dark Thirty and Snowden.

Jodie became the first woman to portray the doctor when she took over from Peter Capaldi in 2017.

She bowed out of the show in a special episode to mark the BBC’s centenary in October.

She was also Beth Latimer in Broadchurch (2013-2017) and Orla O’Riordan in Time (2023).

Despite her successful career she jumped at the chance to be involved in Tabby McTat.
