Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Simmonds told fans that she has been rushed to hospital – and said she was gutted to be spending the lead up to Christmas in hospital.

The former Paralympian swimmer, 29, shared a photo from her hospital bed, with her hand hooked to a drip, on Saturday morning as she updated her fans about her condition.

Sharing a photo on social media with her 117,000 followers, Ellie wrote: "Never would of thought spent days in December and lead up to Christmas in hospital.

She added: "Huge thank you to all the nurses, doctors and staff at Walsall Manor NHS Hospital for looking after me."

Ellie didn't divulge the reason for her hospital visit.

She took part in Strictly last year, when she was partnered with Nikita Kuzmin before their exit in week seven.

She loved swapping the pool for the dance floor but her time on the show came to an end after she faced Molly Rainford and her partner Carlos Gu in the show’s dance-off where they had to perform their routines again.

The judges, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton du Beke, all chose to rescue Molly and Carlos following a second dance, resulting in Ellie and Nikita’s elimination.

Following their exit, Ellie, who previously said she feels "sexy" on the dancefloor, thanked Nikita for transforming perceptions of dance and making it accessible to all.

On Strictly's spin-off show, It Takes Two, Ellie explained that regardless of whatever disabilities dancers may have, dancing was available to anyone and everyone.

Ellie said: "I’ve literally had the time of my life. It’s been the most incredible experience – life changing really. I want to thank Nikita ever so much. I’m going to miss him – he’s changed my life and confidence."

She continued: "I’ve literally loved waking up every single day and dancing, I’m going to dance forever. It’s incredible, this show is life changing. He’s changed my life."

Back in the summer, Ellie then hit headlines after she candidly revealed she had been placed for adoption at three months old – due to her dwarfism.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star opened up about her childhood in an ITV documentary.

The news that the former Strictly contestant is in hospital comes just a day after new photographs of the final three celebrities of this series were released ahead of the upcoming final.

On Saturday night, Ellie Leach will compete in the grand finale with professional partner Vito Coppola against fellow stars Bobby Brazier and his dance partner Dianne Buswell and Layton Williams with Nikita Kuzmin (Ellie Simmonds' former partner).

Each couple will perform their favourite routine from the series, one picked by the judges for them to have another go at, and a new show dance.
