ears and fluffy tails &#8211; but experts warn they make TERRIBLE pets and can even attack owners\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>Capybaras<\/h2>\n<p>While this might be a highly unusual choice, owning a capybara is completely legal in the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chris Lewis, captivity research officer at wildlife charity Born Free, says the number of capybaras in the UK is unknown but could be on the rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UK operates under a &#8216;negative list&#8217; system, meaning that any animal can legally be owned without a licence unless there is a specific piece of legislation against this.<\/p>\n<p>Until 2007, capybaras were listed under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act so a special licence was needed to own one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, now the capybara has been removed from the list, anyone can purchase one and keep it with no oversight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Trends with capybara, will likely have begun to increase since their removal for the DWA because now you&#8217;re licence-free,&#8217; Mr Lewis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;That deterrent that was there, is no longer there so it opens up avenues [to ownership]&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/10\/08\/78696021-12833361-The_capybara_was_considered_a_dangerous_animal_and_needed_a_spec-a-7_1702196471317.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The capybara was considered a dangerous animal and needed a special licence to own until 2007, now anyone can buy, sell or own these large animals<\/p>\n<p>Even though it is legal, Mr Lewis says he would &#8216;strongly urge people not to keep capybara&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While they may be small when young, capybaras are the world&#8217;s largest rodents and can weigh up to 175lbs.<\/p>\n<p>They are also partly aquatic, requiring large bodies of water, and live in herds of up to 100 members in the wild.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis added: &#8216;It&#8217;s very unlikely that people have the facilities to provide what they require.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2>Axolotls\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps one of the most unusual animals on the list, these rare amphibians are known for their ability to regenerate lost limbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite being considered critically endangered in the wild, there are no restrictions on the trade of axolotls.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority for sale are captive-bred and not caught in the wild.<\/p>\n<p>But while it might sound good that more of these endangered animals are being bred, the varieties sold as pets have little resemblance to those found in the wild.<\/p>\n<p>The critically endangered amphibian is naturally brown or grey to blend in with the mud of its natural habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Only in captivity is the pink and white albino colouration selected for, meaning the pet trade does nothing at all to help the conservation of these animals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/10\/08\/78695943-12833361-Axolotls_are_critically_endangered_in_the_wild_but_there_are_no_-a-2_1702196470765.jpg\" height=\"480\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Axolotls are critically endangered in the wild but there are no restrictions on their sale as pets. However, they have a lot of specialist requirements and are very hard to care for<\/p>\n<h3>What are Axolotls?<\/h3>\n<p>Axolotls are a type of amphibious salamander.<\/p>\n<p>It is native to only one lake system near Mexico city.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other amphibians the Axolotl never undergoes metamorphosis and so stays young throughout its life.<\/p>\n<p>They are often studied by scientists due to their ability to regenerate lost limbs.<\/p>\n<p>In Aztec legend, an Axolotl is the god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, who disguised himself as a salamander.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis says that his team became aware of a big spike in the trade of these rare amphibians after salamanders became part of Minecraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There are pressures from social media and even from children in the household, and sometimes parents will relent not realizing what comes with that,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, parents who did give into the temptation to please their kids with a new pet were in for disappointment according to Mr Lewis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewis says: &#8216;They&#8217;re not a very interactive animal, for the most part they will just sit at the bottom of the tank and because they&#8217;re an ambush predator they&#8217;re not going to be swimming around the tank.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Axolotls also have very sensitive skin so cannot be handled and are extremely prone to infections if the water is not kept very clean.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with the fact that axolotls can live up to 15 years, this creates a lot of problems for an animal that a child is very likely to lose interest in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Regan, wildlife campaigns manager at charity World Animal Protection, told MailOnline that this can also cause the animals to suffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The sad reality is that when wild animals are not free to eat, move, behave and socialise as they would in the wild, they suffer,&#8217; in pain\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>However, Mr Lewis warns that this behaviour hides a darker origin.<\/p>\n<p>Marmosets are separated from their mothers at a very young age and hand-reared by humans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This causes the monkeys to see their keeper as the primary care-giver and to become extremely attached to particular humans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr Lewis says that this can cause &#8216;severe behaviour issues in the future&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>He explains that in the absence of their natural social interactions, the marmosets become highly focused on one person and their behaviour can turn overly protective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;When they&#8217;re young that&#8217;s not too much of a problem, but when they get older and have sharp claws it becomes more of an issue,&#8217; They were tamed and used for work or for their meat.<\/p>\n<p>A study published by University of Maine researchers in 2011 found evidence that dogs were being bred, and, eaten, by humans living in Texas some 9,400 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A more recent study in 2017 found\u00a0dogs were domesticated in a single event by humans living in Eurasia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr Krishna Veeramah, an assistant professor in evolution at Stony Brook University, told MailOnline: &#8216;We&#8217;ve found clear evidence that dogs were domesticated 20,000 to 40,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;New research last year provocatively suggested that dogs could have been domesticated twice but our conclusion was there is no evidence for dual domestication.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We would argue that finding evidence for only one domestication event is a big deal, because it is very important to helping us understand how domestication works.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>His research found that dogs evolved to be a separate species from wild wolves sometime between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not known if they were the first pets, and kept for companionship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A study this year found\u00a0 compared the genomes, or complete genetic codes, of modern domestic and wild rabbits to see how long it had taken them to diverge.<\/p>\n<p>Using the known mutation rate of certain biomolecules as a &#8216;molecular clock&#8217; they found it was not possible to pin down rabbit domestication to a single date or event.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the creation of tame buns appeared to be a cumulative effect stretching back to Roman times and possibly the Stone Age.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The story of domestication is not a linear progression from wild to domestic, Larsen told the Smithsonian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;These things exist on a continuum,&#8217; says Larson.
