A major incident has been declared with residents been evacuated from their homes as a bomb disposal squad investigates a ‘suspicious item’ at an address on a quiet road in north east England.<\/p>\n
Cumbria Police said they discovered a ‘potential electrical issue’ at residence on\u00a0Steel Street, Ulverston, on Wednesday afternoon following concerns for a person’s welfare.<\/p>\n
A 46-year-old man was arrested and held in custody, and police and other emergency response teams have remained at the scene late into the night.<\/p>\n
A number of neighbours were ordered to leave their homes, with a 100m cordon was put in place.<\/p>\n
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to assess a ‘potential electrical issue’ and their investigations were expected to continue ‘for a number of hours’.<\/p>\n

Chief Superintendent Mick Bird, of Cumbria Constabulary, said: ‘A major incident has been declared to coordinate the activity of numerous agencies in providing a comprehensive response to support residents who have been evacuated from their homes this evening.<\/p>\n
‘An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is ongoing with their assessment, which may last a number of hours.<\/p>\n
‘The priority of this response is to ensure the safety of all residents. As soon as it is deemed safe to do so, residents will be allowed to return to their homes.<\/p>\n
‘I would like to thank once again those impacted by this evacuation for their continued patience.’<\/p>\n
Westmorland & Furness Council has opened a reception centre at Ulverston Leisure Centre for those who have been evacuated and require accommodation.<\/p>\n
