{"id":134945,"date":"2023-12-04T01:56:33","date_gmt":"2023-12-04T01:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluemull.com\/?p=134945"},"modified":"2023-12-04T01:56:33","modified_gmt":"2023-12-04T01:56:33","slug":"david-davis-urges-government-to-block-telegraph-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluemull.com\/world-news\/david-davis-urges-government-to-block-telegraph-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"David Davis urges government to block Telegraph sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1> David Davis urges the government to block the sale of the Telegraph to an Abu Dhabi-backed fund<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>RedBird IMI is a joint venture which has backing from Abu Dhabi&#8217;s ruling family<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Former Brexit Secretary David Davis has urged the Government to block the sale of The Daily Telegraph to an Abu Dhabi-backed fund.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after ex-prime minister Liz Truss also called for the newspaper&#8217;s editorial independence to be guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Their warnings come amid growing concerns about the controversial bid by RedBird IMI, a joint venture with backing from Abu Dhabi&#8217;s ruling family, to buy the Telegraph and The Spectator magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer opened an investigation into the sale.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Davis yesterday urged the Government to go further and halt the sale.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/04\/00\/78537029-0-Former_Brexit_Secretary_David_Davis_has_urged_the_Government_to_-m-33_1701651540421.jpg\" height=\"595\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former Brexit Secretary David Davis has urged the Government to block the sale of The Daily Telegraph to an Abu Dhabi-backed fund<\/p>\n<p>He told GB News: &#8216;I just think it&#8217;s wrong. We shouldn&#8217;t normally, in my view, allow people who are outside the reach of our country to own major newspapers.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It [The Telegraph] has massive influence both at elections and on people&#8217;s general views.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Why should we give that power to the Emirates?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether he thought the Government should step in and stop the sale, Mr Davis replied: &#8216;Yes, in my view absolutely.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ms Truss called for ministers to protect the paper&#8217;s independence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/04\/00\/78537031-0-image-a-34_1701651562593.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ex-prime minister Liz Truss also called for the newspaper&#8217;s editorial independence to be guaranteed<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/04\/00\/78537037-0-image-a-35_1701651584642.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lloyds Banking Group took control of Telegraph Media Group from the Barclay family in June, due to debts<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I want the Government to ensure that any ownership of the Press enables them to freely publish according to what they believe to be the case,&#8217; she told The Sunday Telegraph.
