Please email: tips@dailymail.com *\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shoppers visiting Booths today were delighted about the supermarket axing almost all of its self-service tills.<\/p>\n<p>Booths, which has been dubbed the &#8216;northern Waitrose&#8217;, said it chose to scrap the machines because it feels customers get a better experience at manned checkouts.<\/p>\n<p>But sources at Waitrose, which has had self-checkouts for 12 years, said unmanned tills continued to be &#8216;really popular&#8217; with shoppers and would not be removed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the Booths supermarket in Burscough, Lancashire, Paula Beckett, 56, said: &#8216;It\u2019s brilliant, 100 per cent right.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Saying that, I\u2019ve just used them for some quick items, but I don\u2019t like using them. People need jobs. When you speak to the staff in Booths you always get good service. It\u2019s a good, friendly family business.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>His wife added: &#8216;We went to the till today rather that using the scan machine. We always like to do that.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Another happy customer, Jackie Newton, agreed: &#8216;It\u2019s fantastic. I read an article about some shops going fully self service. and decided that &#8216;rather than artificial intelligence, we&#8217;re going for actual intelligence&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Staff at the chain added that they wanted to ensure customers were served by people with &#8216;high levels of warm, personal care&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>All but two Booths stores will put staff back on the tills \u2013 with the exceptions being in the Lake District at Keswick and Windermere which can become very busy at times.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE Booths removes almost all self-service checkouts and puts staff back behind tills as experts say move will cut shoplifting<\/h3>\n<p>Booths managing director Nigel Murray told\u00a0BBC Radio Lancashire today: &#8216;Our customers have told us this over time, that the self-scan machines that we&#8217;ve got in our stores they can be slow, they can be unreliable, they&#8217;re obviously impersonal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We stock quite a lot of loose items\u00a0\u2013 fruit and veg and bakery\u00a0\u2013 and as soon as you go to a self-scan with those you&#8217;ve got to get a visual verification on them, and some customers don&#8217;t know one different apple versus another for example.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He said there was &#8216;all sorts of fussing about with that&#8217; not to mention a deterrent to casual shoplifting. Now let&#8217;s see if others follow suit?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;Levels of shoplifting may spell the end for self-checkouts. Whatever they save on staff costs is surely eroded by thieving &#8211; which honest folk pay for through higher prices.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine, tweeted: &#8216;The main benefit is time-saving &#8211; even with the errors. Without them you get stuck behind people doing the weekly shop when all you&#8217;re buying is milk. And in convenience stores without them you often have queues snaking around the store.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;Aldi is good now &#8211; in stores where they&#8217;ve introduced self-checkouts they still have two or three staffed checkouts open as well.
