The girlfriend of ice hockey star Adam Johnson ran onto the ice to pray by his side after a\u00a0skate slashed his throat in a freak accident, it has emerged.<\/p>\n
Adam Johnson, 29, died after having been\u00a0struck in the neck by an ice hockey blade during the match between\u00a0Nottingham\u00a0Panthers and Sheffield Steelers at\u00a0Utilita Arena Sheffield on Saturday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n
His partner, who was in the crowd during the match, is understood to have rushed to his side after the horrific accident,\u00a0The Sun reported.<\/p>\n
Fellow hockey players formed a ring around Mr Johnson to provide privacy as thousands of spectators were asked to exit the stadium and paramedics put up a protective screen, witnesses recall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Johnson, 29, was killed after he reportedly suffered an accidental gash to his throat by rival player Matt Petgrave.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Witnesses have claimed the ‘horrible’ accident was an ‘one in a million chance occurrence’ that will ‘probably never happen again’.<\/p>\n
Hazel Woods, a Panthers fan who attended the match, said she cannot stop replaying the tragedy in her head. She recalled how Mr Petgrave’s blade was ‘stuck’ in Mr Johnson’s throat, leaving ‘blood everywhere’.<\/p>\n
‘His team mates looked horrified and banded together around him to shield him from the crowd. They were amazing,’ she told the newspaper.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ms Woods added that ‘no on was to blame’ for the ‘totally tragic’ accident, saying:\u00a0‘Normally there would be a lot of rivalry between the Panthers and Steelers but not today, we have put that aside. It’s the hockey family coming together.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fans have left flowers, a shirt bearing Mr Johnson’s number, candles and cards with heartfelt messages outside the arena in a makeshift memorial for the hockey star.<\/p>\n
Assistant coach Kevin Moore said that the club is\u00a0‘really grateful for all the love and support’ that has been shown for Mr Johnson, adding that ‘together’ everyone would heal.<\/p>\n
‘We are going to be strong and will continue that way and we will do you guys proud,’ Mr Moore said.\u00a0‘We appreciate you coming here today and we thank you for all your support.’<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, officers are investigating Mr Johnson’s tragic death.\u00a0South Yorkshire Police were contacted at 8.25pm on Saturday and later confirmed the athlete was pronounced deceased at hospital.<\/p>\n
Officers from the force remain at the scene and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 8.25pm yesterday (28 October) to reports that a player had been seriously injured during a Sheffield Steelers versus Nottingham Panthers game at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield.<\/p>\n
‘Officers attended the scene alongside other emergency services and one man, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Sadly, he was later pronounced deceased at hospital.<\/p>\n
‘Our officers remain at the scene carrying out enquiries today (29 October) and our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.’<\/p>\n

Around 8,000 fans saw the nightmare collision on Saturday night before the game was quickly stopped and screens were brought onto the pitch to protect the players involved. The match was later abandoned.<\/p>\n
Sharing the news, his club said: ‘The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night.<\/p>\n
‘The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.<\/p>\n

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called at around 8.21pm before sending two ambulances and a critical care paramedic – with one man taken to hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n
South Yorkshire Police were contacted four minutes later, and confirmed he was later pronounced deceased at hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Officers from the force remain at the scene and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Devastated spectators who witnessed the accident were left in ‘tears’ and hugging one another, with one saying ‘they’ll never get over’ what they saw.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘It was horrible to see. People were crying and passing out,’ another shocked witness added.<\/p>\n
The freak accident appeared to have been caused by a Sheffield Steelers’ player as he tried to tackle another one of Mr Johnson’s teammates.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The northern club shared a statement from the\u00a0Elite Ice Hockey League – adding: ‘Everyone at the Steelers send their condolences to Adam Johnson’s partner, family team mates.’<\/p>\n

Another fan – Helen Brearley – added: ‘Please know that Adam inspired many young players in Nottingham.’<\/p>\n
And a third – Alan Hukins – said: ‘So sad to hear this terrible news. Sheffield is my team and Nottingham are our great rivals but we are with all our hockey friends in Nottingham and especially their family at this terrible time.’<\/p>\n
After witnessing the incident, one person wrote on X, formerly known as\u00a0Twitter: ‘Stuff of nightmares at the panthers game tonight, praying for Adam Johnson.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Another wrote on Facebook: ‘My 17-year-old has come home in bits, he said he can’t un-see what he’s seen tonight. He’s white as a sheet. My thoughts and prayers are with the teams involved.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Someone else shared: ‘My son and I were there, watching play intensely. We just keep hugging each other. A lot of upset folk, so I know we’re not alone.’\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
