New Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) changes could see Universal Credit claimants impacted.

Thousands of parents on the scheme are expected to face benefit cuts under major changes introduced. The shake-up will impact claimants with children aged three to 12.

These people previously had to spend between 16-25 hours a week either in work, with job coaches or searching for a job, reports Mirror Online.

Now under laws being brought in today (October 25), it will increase to a maximum of 30 hours a week.

It is believed if claimants don't stick to their benefit requirements without good reason, they could risk their Universal Credit being cut.

Eligible claimants will have to agree new commitments like accepting to increase their hours when searching and applying for jobs. They must also update their CV or attend workshops with their coach.

The DWP said the number of hours parents will be expected to spend in work or applying for careers will depend on their individual circumstances, including childcare.

Self-employed parents of three to 12-year-olds will not be impacted by the rule change. The new law was first announced in the Spring Budget by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.
