FANS were left baffled by Owen Goodman's bizarre own goal for Colchester United against Grimsby Town last night.

The League Two strugglers travelled to Blundell Park desperate for three points.

Their quest began in awful fashion, however, when Goodman had a nightmare moment to forget.

With the score level at 0-0 on seven minutes, an interception by Colchester defender Will Greenidge sent the ball back towards his own goal from around 35 yards.

As it looped back towards Goodman, it bounced awkwardly.

Not wanting to use his hands and be caught out by the pass back rule, Goodman tried to head it to safety.

But to his horror, he could only head the ball into his own net, handing Grimsby a bizarre early lead.

Seeing the clip, one frustrated Colchester fan wrote: "Send us down #colu."

While a second tweeted: "wtf was he trying."

A third added: "Wtf is that."

FREE BETS – BEST BETTING OFFERS AND BONUSES NEW CUSTOMERS

Another added: "Hahahahah oh my days, Colchester have conceded the funniest goal of the season."

Goodman is on loan at Colchester from Crystal Palace this season.

He is yet to debut for the Eagles, but did make their bench four times last term.

The 6ft 4in stopper has made 14 appearances for Colchester so far this time around, and has even earned two caps for England's Under-20s.

Amazingly, Colchester recovered to grab a precious win on the road.

Joe Taylor levelled for them just three minutes after Goodman's gaffe.

Zach Mitchell then gave them the lead on 35 minutes, although Grimsby equalised via Donovan Wilson shortly after half-time.

Arthur Read grabbed a 64th minute winner for the visitors sending them up to 21st in the table, three points above the dreaded drop zone.
