James Jordan has criticised Strictly Come Dancing contestant Layton Williams for participating in the show as he is a trained dancer.

Former Strictly pro-dancer James, 45, praised Layton’s performance last week but has since addressed his dancing background.

Layton, 29, and his partner Nikita, 25, received a score of 36 while just missing out on a perfect 40 although the pair received minimal criticism from the judges.

In an interview with Hello! James picked up on an error during his performance last week which the judges failed to mention and said: “When he’s in frame, he was a little bit stiff in the frame, it’s a little bit wooden”.

Speaking about Layton’s performance with Nikita, James said he was being “ultra picky” because “he’s a fully trained professional dancer”.

READ MORE: Phillip Schofield looks downcast with wife and daughter months after ITV scandal

He went on: “[Layton] is a fully trained professional dancer.

“When they came out you essentially had two professional dancers standing next to each other. Let’s not say it’s because he’s really talented and he’s worked really hard because that really belittles our world, the dancing world.

“That someone can come out and be that good after a week’s training. You can’t.”

Despite this, he was quick to praise the performance and said: “It is probably one of my favourite dances I have ever seen on the show, but it is only because he is a professional dancer.”

Don’t miss…

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. I’ve never understood it. That could be his best dance! And then what happens is, they get to do it again in the finale and they’ll get straight tens.”

“It’ll be exactly the same, or sometimes not as good as the first time they do it. I am a firm believer if it’s worth the ten, give a ten.”

“I think there’s something there where maybe they’re told you can’t give tens in week two. Your guess is as good as mine. I think it was worth the ten.”

Layton is best known for his theatre and film career. His titles roles in the West End include Billy Elliot and Everyone is Talking about Jamie. As well as his screen credits including Bad Education – where he rose to fame, and I Hate Suzie.

The theatre star – who previously appeared as a young Michael Jackson in the West End production of Thriller, admitted in a post on X that he is trained in jazz, tap, and ballet “to a certain degree”.

Before saying: “So dance is in me, it’s a core feeling and I love it and it’s my passion. But this world of Latin and Ballroom is completely new to me, so that’s what I’m excited to explore.”
