Sausages are one of Britain’s top delicacies.

Whether we’re enjoying a fry-up, butty or bangers and mash, they’re super versatile. So it’s important we’re cooking them properly!

While they may seem like an easy ingredient to rustle up, they can be surprisingly tricky. And a common pitfall home cooks fall into is cooking them evenly.

Many of us burn the outside while sizzling in the frying pan or throwing onto a scorching hot grill. But taking the bangers out early can lead to them being raw in the middle.

Thankfully, a food expert has shared a "foolproof" hack to prevent this blunder for happening – and it involves poaching sausages before putting them on the heat.

Culinary Consultant J. Kenji López-Alt told Serious Eats: "By covering the sausages in cold water on the stovetop and slowly bringing them up to 150°F in their water bath, you can get them cooked perfectly evenly from edge to edge."

Then after they're gently cooked through, you can focus your attention on crisping up the skin. This should only take a minute or two on each side.

He added: "All that's required is a quick trip to the hot side of the grill, and you're done."

Once you've perfected your sausages, it's time to think about the accompaniments.
