{"id":131055,"date":"2023-09-26T20:43:19","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T20:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluemull.com\/?p=131055"},"modified":"2023-09-26T20:43:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T20:43:19","slug":"sir-alok-sharma-reveals-he-will-not-stand-at-the-next-general-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluemull.com\/world-news\/sir-alok-sharma-reveals-he-will-not-stand-at-the-next-general-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Alok Sharma reveals he will NOT stand at the next General Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Sir Alok Sharma reveals he will NOT stand at the next General Election: Ex-COP26 president resigns from the Conservative Party after string of Tory MPs also make exodus<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Tory MP for Reading West made the announcement on X this evening<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sir Alok Sharma\u00a0has revealed he will not stand at the next General Election as he joins a string of Tory MPs in bowing out of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The former COP26 Climate Conference President, who has been the MP for Reading West since 2010, made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed he would continue to support his Conservative colleagues and constituents, while also championing action on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing his decision not to stand in the next election, which many believe will take place next year, the 56-year-old joined other top Tories who are leaving Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 MPs have announced they will not stand again at the next general election, including\u00a0Tory former cabinet ministers Dominic Raab, Matt Hancock and Sajid Javid, and the current Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>Labour former ministers Harriet Harman and Margaret Hodge have also said they plan to step down, as has the SNP&#8217;s former leader at Westminster Ian Blackford and select committee chairs Sir Bill Cash, William Wragg and Robin Walker.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Top Conservatives, including Nadine Dorries, Nigel Adams and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson have already resigned ahead of the end of their terms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/26\/20\/75861671-12563409-image-a-11_1695754835575.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Sir Alok Sharma has announced he will step down as a Conservative MP at the next General Election. Pictured: Sharma at the Global Citizen NOW summit in New York last April<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/26\/20\/75861589-12563409-image-a-5_1695754819801.jpg\" height=\"662\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>In a letter published on X, the MP said it had been &#8216;the honour of my life to serve at the MP for a constituency in the town where I grew up&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The former cabinet member&#8217;s decision means a total of 47 Conservative MPs have announced they will not be standing at the next election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE HERE:\u00a0 Rishi Sunak gets a boost before Tory conference as polls show Conservatives clawing back ground on Labour following Net Zero U-turn\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>It comes as Labour continues to hold a strong lead over the Tories in the polls, with the Conservatives more than 20 points down on the opposition for large parts of the year.<\/p>\n<p>However, in recent weeks Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has clawed back ground on Labour following his U-turn on Net Zero, bringing the lead down to 16 points.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Alok, who previously held the role of Business Secretary and International Development Secretary in Boris Johnson&#8217;s cabinet, revealed his decision to step back on Tuesday evening, September 26.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter published on X, he wrote: &#8216;I have this evening informed my local Conservative Association that I have decided not to stand at the next general election and therefore do not seek to be adopted as the Conservative candidate for the revised seat of Reading West &amp; Mid Berkshire. This has not been an easy decision for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It has been the honour of my life to serve as the MP for a constituency in the town where I grew up and a privilege to serve in Government and represent the UK on the international stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My grateful thanks to all the constituents, local organisations, charities and businesses I have had the pleasure of working with, since being selected as the parliamentary candidate in 2006, as we have campaigned together on a whole range of issues to make our local area a better place to live and work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I will continue to support my Conservative colleagues and serve my constituents diligently for the remainder of my time as an MP, as well as champion in Parliament the causes I care deeply about, especially climate action.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/26\/20\/75861591-12563409-The_MP_for_Reading_West_previously_served_as_the-a-12_1695754948161.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The MP for Reading West previously served as the COP26 Climate Conference President. Pictured: Sharma stood next to some wind turbines<\/p>\n<p>His Reading West constituency, which he has held since 2010, will be subject to boundary changes at the next general election and will be renamed Reading West and Mid Berkshire.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2019 general election, Sir Alok increased his majority to 4,117 from 2,876 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Alok was knighted for his contributions as a world leader in the effort to tackle climate change in the 2023 New Year Honours List.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His announcement comes a few days after he raised concerns about Prime Minister Rishi Sunak weakening a host of pledges designed to help the UK achieve a net zero economy by 2050.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a series of tweets last week, Sir Alok wrote: &#8216;I&#8217;m concerned about fracturing of UK political consensus on climate action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Chopping and changing policies creates uncertainty for businesses and the public.
