SHOPPING in person has its perks – you can see the clothes in the flesh, feel the materials, and often notice things you’d pass by online.

But one thing that’s certainly not a plus is waiting in a half-an-hour long queue for the changing rooms to try a garment on.

So one smart thrifting pro has compiled a list of handy tips to tell whether a pair of jeans will fit you without having to try them on.

The second-hand clothing reseller, who uses the alias @PickedByPickles on social media, is a charity shop aficionado and regularly posts videos of her jaw-dropping finds.

In a recent clip, she detailed the fab hacks she’s learned to help her instantly tell whether a pair of jeans is the right size while she’s rummaging through a store.

“The first trick,” the thrifting whizz told viewers, “is putting the denim right on your belly button and wrapping it around your waist until it touches your spine.”

Apparently if the denim reaches all the way, it’s a sure bet that the trousers will fit.

The next unlikely method is to see whether your forearm can fit in the waistband of the item.

Stick your elbow in one side of the waistband, and see if your hand can squeeze in the other side – if so, the jeans are the right size.

Her final suggestion is what’s known as the “neck trick”.

To do it, take the jeans by the waistband and wrap them around your neck, seeing if both sides come together

“If the denim touches, they will fit perfect,” the savvy shopper says.

The tips might seem a long-shot, but the influencer confirms that after trying on a pair of shorts that met all three criteria, she was astonished to find “they actually fit me perfect”.

Her handy clip quickly amassed a jaw-dropping 837k views, with Instagram users flocking to the comments to share their opinions on the nifty hacks.

“I have thick thighs and a juicy [bum],” one commented, “and I’ve done the neck trick for years. It never fails me.”

“I’m a size 12-16 in jeans depending on the brand, and these tricks work 100% of the time,” another advocate reckoned.

But some users weren’t quite as sure, with one writing: “I have a super small waist and much bigger hips/butt/thighs. It rarely works for me.”

“I’ve tried the wrapping around neck trick, but I’m a bigger gal – definitely plus size.. it didn’t work,” another confessed. “HOWEVER the from belly button to spine I’m going to HAVE to try because that seems more accurate!!”

Fabulous will pay for your exclusive stories.
