For most people, winning a fiver on a scratch card is considered a great win – but can you imagine winning £40,000?

An honest barmaid as sparked a debate after returning a $20 scratch card to the person who gifted it to her, once she realised it had won $50,000.

To make matters worse, the man she gave it back to only offered her a $20 tip after the exchange.

Her best friend took to Reddit’s ‘Server Life’ forum to share the experience and find out what others would have done in the same situation.

She wrote ‘I think about this at least once a week. A couple years ago my best friend was bartending and a guy that had dinner up at the bar with her tipped her with a $20 scratcher.

‘She turned around and scratched it right then and the scratcher won $50,000.

‘Her, being a ridiculously honest and empathetic person told the guy and saw his face just DROP.’

She then shockingly decided to give the scratch card back to the man, who then gave her $20 cash instead.

Her friend asks Redditors what they would have done and the responses are mostly in agreement that they would keep it a secret and bag the cash.

The top response with over 1,000 upvotes, reads ‘Omg, f*** that. I would have kept my mouth shut tighter than I ever had before, and I’m also an honest and empathetic person.

‘The fact that he only gave her $20 after makes it so much worse.’

Others agreed, writing ‘Seriously. That is life-changing down payment on a house money. He would have had to tear it from my cold dead hands’ and ‘She played herself’.

Her friend, who wrote the Reddit post, said it ‘kills her’ to this day and she thinks about it more than she should.

However, others could empathise with the bartender, arguing that it would have been hard to keep the $50,000 win a secret when she opened it in front of the customer

Adding ‘I was so upset she didn’t keep it!! And $20 is just a slap in the face…

‘I was expecting him to at least split it with her or something. But no this isn’t rage bait this legit happened and I think about it all the time.

‘She’s very much into “karma” and other people needing stuff more than her etc. so she genuinely didn’t regret giving it back but I absolutely wouldn’t have.’

She also later came back with an update that she had spoken with the man’s partner since he won the money, and revealed that supposedly ‘the guy ended up blowing it at casinos in the area’.

Redditors replied ‘They are an idiot and the guy tipping her $20 after is such a slap in the face. Wow’ and ‘That’s so dumb, there’s no reason for her to give it back, it’s legally hers after he gave it to her.’

Another user added ‘this is why I will never provide lottery tix as a gift, Christmas present or related.’

Someone wrote ‘Could you really keep your composure after realizing you won $50,000?’

Another chimed in with ‘She sounds like a good-hearted & honest person. Karma will come back to her in other ways’.
