This is the bizarre moment police officers try to get control of a loose cow.

Video footage posted on X, formerly Twitter, is understood to show the dark brown animal wandering up Halifax Road in the north of the city at around 8am this morning.

The escaped beast trotted alongside Papa John’s pizza and a One Stop convenience store as baffled drivers during peak traffic were forced to move out of the way.

A police officer wearing hi-vis and a police car with its lights turned on then tried to direct the cow back towards safety and away from the road.

But despite the officer’s attempts to guide the cow, it continued to evade being caught and enjoyed its day out away from the farm.

Video footage posted on X, formerly Twitter, showed a dark brown cow wandering up Halifax Road in the north of the city this morning

The clip, filmed by a driver on the other side of the road, then showed the cow slowing down to a walk as it passed by the car’s window.

A confused child in the background could be heard saying: ‘God god god. How did that cow escape?’

The loose farm animal had moved on to Halifax Road after police were initially called to reports of it walking down Midhurst Road.

South Yorkshire Police later confirmed that the animal had been recaptured and was safely back in its field around an hour later.

And the incident is not the first time police officers in Sheffield have been called out to deal with a rogue cow.

In 2014 armed police were sent out to deal with an escaped farm animal in Manor Top – but the animal was eventually recaptured after being coaxed into a trailer by keepers from the park.

In a statement, South Yorkshire Police said: ‘We were called at about 8am this morning (Thursday 21 September) by a member of the public to report a cow walking down Midhurst Road in Sheffield.

‘Officers attended and the cow had moved on to Halifax Road. They closed the road and ushered the cow away from the carriageway for both its own safety and the safety of other road users.

‘The cow’s owner was contacted and the animal was collected. It was safely back in its field just after 9am.’
