Email tips@dailymail.com<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An Irishman has been arrested in Brussels after breaking off part of a statue outside the city&#8217;s Stock Exchange &#8211; which had just cost \u00a315,000 to restore.<\/p>\n<p>The city centre building, known as the Bourse, was reopened just the day before the incident on Sunday following a three-year restoration project costing\u00a0\u00a377million.<\/p>\n<p>Shocking video shows the man, who appears to be drunk, climbing up the statue, which is called &#8216;the hand with a torch&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Astonished crowds watched as he clambered onto the sculpture, which depicts a lion and a man holding a torch and is one of two which flank the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>As he goes to dismount the artwork, he grabs onto it to steady himself, snapping the torch and what appears to be part of the arm off as he jumps to the ground.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/15\/75385729-12513789-image-a-3_1694615137259.jpg\" height=\"732\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Shocking video taken of the incident on Sunday shows the man, who appears to be drunk, climbing up the statue<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/15\/75385731-12513789-image-a-4_1694615172689.jpg\" height=\"712\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Astonished crowds watched as he clambered onto the sculpture, which depicts a lion and a man holding a torch<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/15\/75385727-12513789-image-a-2_1694614293540.jpg\" height=\"706\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>As the Irish national went to dismount the artwork, he grabbed onto it to steady himself, snapping the arm of the statue off<\/p>\n<p>The man is thought to have been intercepted by police in a nearby fast food restaurant soon after and arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Stock Exchange now wants to recoup the thousands in damages directly from the man, Belgian media reports.<\/p>\n<p>Nel Vandevennet, who managed the restoration project, told outlet VRT NWS: &#8216;The repairs are going to cost a lot of money because the work will have to be done by real craftsmen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It is listed heritage and there will be follow-up from the monuments and landscapes agency of the Brussels region.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Pictures show the erosion suffered by the stone statue before it was restored. Now, it will need to be worked on again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/16\/75388419-12513789-image-a-17_1694617801829.jpg\" height=\"428\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Pictures show the statue in a state of disrepair before it was restored.
