Craig Revel Horwood has opened up about his plans to quit Strictly Come Dancing.

Craig is well known for his harsh critique on the BBC series, and while he loves appearing alongside Shirley Ballas, Anton du Beke and Motsi Mabuse, he may hang up his dancing shoes in the next couple of years.

Speaking in a new interview, Craig admitted he “wants to enjoy life” when he turns 60.

When discussing his plans to retire, Craig said: “I’m working hard while I can, especially as I love what I do. It keeps me on my toes, darlings!

“I’m now the same age as the late, great Len Goodman was when he first started – that’s scary, isn’t it?!”

And this year’s line-up is fab-u-lous!”

Craig, who has been a judge since 2004, had originally planned to retire when he turned 50.

When speaking to Kaye Adams and Karen MacKenzie on their How to be 60 podcast, the Strictly judge confessed he didn’t expect to be dancing past his 50s.

Don’t miss…

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. I’d set up a plan to retire at exactly 50, from when I was 25 and I was doing Miss Saigon – something like that in the West End.

“And then I thought, ‘Right, I’m going to set up a retirement plan because I don’t want to be doing this for the rest of my life’.

“And I went to the people who were arranging it… and I could only afford £126 a month to put into it, but I’d never changed that amount.”

Carig added: “And I’m now coming up to 60 and I still haven’t retired, so there you are.

“I was looking forward to old days, I was looking forward to getting fat, I was looking forward to not having to diet anymore or do exercise, or dance anymore.

“As much as I love dancing, when you’ve done it for a living, it is the last thing you want to do at parties – it’s bizarre.”

On Saturday, Craig and his fellow judges will return to the panel as they watch this year’s celebrities taking to the ballroom floor for the first time.

The 15 stars will make their debut and viewers will finally be able to see which professional dance partner they have been paired with.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday at 6.35pm on BBC One.
