when it comes to space exploration while Bezos fired back that Musk\u2019s own staff believed that he \u2018rarely knew as much as he claimed&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/12\/21\/75350787-12510553-image-a-25_1694550026015.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Musk and Bezos have been fighting for control of space tourism and for contracts with NASA for two decades<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/12\/21\/75350771-12510553-image-a-24_1694550018201.jpg\" height=\"700\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Bezos became the first to launch a rocket to the edge of space on an 11 minute, 62 mile high journey<\/p>\n<p>The rivalry goes back to 2004 when Bezos accepted an invite from Musk to tour the SpaceX facility, Isaacson writes.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards he received a \u2018somewhat curt email\u2019 after from Musk \u2018expressing annoyance\u2019 why Bezos hadn\u2019t invited Musk to Blue Origin in Seattle, so Bezos promptly did.<\/p>\n<p>But on the tour Bezos was taken aback when Musk started telling him how to run the company.<\/p>\n<p>Musk said: \u2018Dude we tried that and that turned out to be really dumb so I\u2019m telling you, don\u2019t do the dumb thing we did\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos thought Musk was \u2018a bit too sure of himself\u2019 given he hadn\u2019t actually launched a rocket yet, Isaacson writes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/12\/21\/75331685-12510553-According_to_the_book_Musk_and_his_colleagues_jetted_to_Moscow_t-a-15_1694549725990.jpg\" height=\"467\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>The new biography by Walter Isaacson has reignited a feud between Musk and Bezos\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tensions flared again in 2011 when NASA approved SpaceX to use the famed Pad 39A at its Cape Canaveral launch site in Florida which was used by the Apollo missions.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos sued and Musk was \u2018furious\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to the book Musk thought it was \u2018ridiculous\u2019 for Blue Origin to complain \u2018when they haven\u2019t even gotten as much as a toothpick to orbit\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Isaacson writes: \u2018Musk ridiculed Bezos\u2019 rockets, pointing out they were capable only of popping up to the edge of space and then falling back: they leaked the far greater thrust necessary to break the Earth\u2019s gravity and go into orbit\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Musk said that \u2018we are more likely to discover unicorns dancing in the flame duct\u2019 than see one of Bezos\u2019 craft docking at the International Space Station within five years.<\/p>\n<p>The battle of the sci-fi barons had \u2018blasted off\u2019, the book claims.<\/p>\n<p>One SpaceX employee even bought dozens of inflatable toy unicorns and photographed them in the pad\u2019s flame duct to troll Bezos.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos further enraged Musk when he applied for a patent called \u2018sea landing of space launch vehicles\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Musk complained that landing ships at sea had been discussed for 50 years. SpaceX sued and Bezos appeared to cancel the patent.<\/p>\n<p>In November of 2015, Bezos became the first to launch a rocket to the edge of space on an 11 minute, 62 mile high journey.<\/p>\n<p>In his first ever Tweet, Bezos said that \u2018full reuse (of a rocket) is a game changer\u2019. He called his reusable rocket \u2018the rarest of beasts\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Musk mocked it in a Tweet saying: \u2018Not quite \u2018rarest\u2019, SpaceX Grasshopper did 6 suborbital flights 3 years ago &amp; is still around\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Four weeks later Musk achieved the same feat with a Falcon 9 rocket, earning what appeared to be praise from Bezos who Tweeted: \u2018Congrats @spacex on landline falcon\u2019s suborbital booster stage. Former employees at SpaceX and Tesla told him, he says, that Musk rarely knew as much as he claimed and that his interventions were usually unhelpful or problematic\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Musk felt that Bezos was a \u2018dilettante whose lack of focus on engineering was one reason Blue Origin had made less progress than SpaceX\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>When Richard Branson launched the first manned space tourism flight earlier this year, Musk turned up in person.<\/p>\n<p>Branson recalls walking into the kitchen of his rented property at 1am for the launch only to find Musk there, barefoot with his baby son, X.<\/p>\n<p>They talked for hours before Branson\u2019s Virgin Galactic craft conducted a successful mission, with Branson on board.<\/p>\n<p>Nine days later when Blue Origin did the same, Musk skipped it.
