A man who spent 48 years avoiding lifts due to his extreme claustrophobia burst into tears after facing his phobia at the tallest building in London.

Appearing on This Morning, Kev Williams braved the contraption to take 52 floors up as he was challenged to meet with his wife Tracey at the top of The Shard – which towers at 1,016 ft (309.6 metres).

Speaking to phobia experts Nik and Eva Speakman in a segment for This Morning, he tearfully opened up about his struggles.

Because of his fear of tight and closed spaces, he hasn’t been on holidays abroad for 20 years – and once, after a leg injury, even had cut off the plaster cast because it ‘made him feel trapped’.

Kev also admitted he avoids cabs or buses because he is uncomfortable with the lack of easy escape.

‘Your heart’s pounding, your mind feels like it’s going to explode and you’re scared all the time,’ he told the programme.

‘Very difficult to just get on with your life knowing that fear is there 24 hours a day.’

The heartwarming segment saw a terrified Kev face his fears as he entered the lift to meet his ‘amazing’ and supportive wife at The Shard.

As he scurried into the small space with the Speakmans, he appeared nervous but braved the task and embraced Nik and Eva in a hug.

‘I’m in a lift, I’m in The Shard… and my wife’s up there… you don’t know how much this means to me,’ he said.

After he reached the top, Kev couldn’t contain his tears as he greeted a proud Tracey.

The Speakmans helped Kev battle his fear by asking about the source of it.

After some digging, it was revealed that when he was younger, Kev’s older brother locked him in a shed – that they had turned into a play den – for a prank.

He had forgotten about it, leaving the panicked young boy trapped for a little while.

The fear experts focused on reframing the memory as a positive one, and looking at the den as somewhere that he enjoyed playing at, which protected the children from bad weather and provided shelter.

‘Your brother is a part of you and he would be devastated to learn the repercussions of a prank,’ Eva said. ‘It’s time to live your life.’

After an emotionally stirring day, Kev even managed to take a taxi back home.
