The ten most dangerous cities in the US for 2023 have been revealed – and the worst might come as a surprise.<\/p>\n
Monroe in Louisiana sustained the top spot for most crime-addled town over the last two years – but it’s been knocked to second place by a new arrival this year.<\/p>\n
According to research by Security Gauge, a small southwestern suburb in Birmingham, Alabama, with a population of just 27,000 tops the table for the most crime per capita this year.<\/p>\n
Bessemer, in Jefferson County, is now officially the most dangerous place to live in America based on proportional crime rates.<\/p>\n
Security Gauge ranked the top 100 most crime-ridden places to live out of every town in the United States with at least 25,000 residents or more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They collated data on violent crimes – homicide, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault – in each town from from all 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the US.\u00a0The stats are contextualized per 1,000 people.<\/p>\n
1. Bessemer, Alabama\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Bessemer topped the 2023 rankings with 33.18 violent crimes per 1,000 population.\u00a0<\/p>\n Residents of America’s most volatile town have a one in 30 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime, according to Security Gauge.\u00a0<\/p>\n With a population size of around 27,000, Bessemer’s crime rate is much higher than other towns with a similar demographic.\u00a0<\/p>\n It ranked particularly badly for physical violence and property crime, along with motor vehicle theft.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bessemer, in Jefferson County, Alabama, is now officially the most dangerous place to live in America based on proportional crime rates<\/p>\n Founded in 1887 by coal magnate Henry DeBardeleben, Bessemer became an industrial powerhouse as a center for ore mining, iron smelting, and the manufacture of iron and coke.\u00a0<\/p>\n Its rapid growth through the 20th century earned it the nickname ‘The Marvel City’ – but development peaked in 1970 amid the decline of railcar manufacturing and steelmaking.\u00a0<\/p>\n Although its industrial portfolio has diversified since then with the introduction of a giant Amazon fulfilment center among other corporations, crime rocketed following rising unemployment in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n 2. Monroe, Louisiana\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With a one in 38 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime, Monroe comes in second place on the danger charts, according to\u00a0Security Gauge.<\/p>\n Some 47,000 people live in the northern Louisiana city, which sits on the Ouachita River.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Monroe in Louisiana sustained the top spot for most crime-addled town over the last two years – but it’s been knocked to second place by a new arrival this year<\/p>\n Home to several museums and the University of Louisiana at Monroe, it seems an unlikely city to take the second place spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n But it has one of the highest murder rates in the United States, according to analysis of reports to the FBI, and had been the most dangerous city for the last two years until it was toppled by Bessemer this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n 3. Saginaw, Michigan<\/span><\/p>\n Based 100 miles of Detroit, which is well known for crime, Saginaw has a violent crime rate of 25.1 per 1,000 residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Saginaw in Michigan has been demoted from fourth most dangerous place to third this year\u00a0<\/p>\n It recently made headlines after two people died and at least 15 more were injured amid a wild unauthorized street party posted on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n A 51-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man were shot dead in a Saturday night shooting in July.\u00a0<\/p>\n 4. Memphis, Tennessee<\/span><\/p>\n Tied in third place with the same crime rating as Saginaw is Memphis in Tennessee.<\/p>\n Located on the Missisippi River, Memphis is known for its rock and roll music scene and Elvis Presley, and has a population of around 700,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Tied in third place with the same crime rating as Saginaw is Memphis in Tennessee (pictured)<\/p>\n It also ranked in the top three for America’s homicide hotspots, with scholars linking rising murder rates to soft-on-crime Democratic leadership and low police morale.\u00a0<\/p>\n A study by WalletHub found that murder rates jumped by a tenth in the country’s biggest cities between the first quarter of 2001 and the same period this year \u2014 and they’re still heading up.<\/p>\n 5. Detroit, Michigan<\/span><\/p>\n The east Michigan city of Detroit home to 620,000 people has a violent crime rating of 23 per 1,000 – with chances of becoming a victim for locals set at one in 43.\u00a0<\/p>\n Violent offenses tracked included rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon.\u00a0<\/p>\n Detroit is consistently ranked among the worst cities\u00a0for crime due to its urban decay and dwindling population.\u00a0<\/p>\n 6. Birmingham, Alabama\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The crime scene in Bessemer leaks into nearby Birmingham too, which often comes near the top of the charts for violent activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n This year it came sixth with a violent crime rating of 20.6 per 1,000, with a one in 49 chance of being a victim for residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n It’s also the city where infamous ‘missing woman’ Carlee Russell, 26, faked her own kidnapping for 49 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n 7. Pine Bluff, Arkansas<\/span><\/p>\n With a violent crime rating of 20.5 per 1,000 residents, the Jefferson County city of Pine Bluff ranks seventh most dangerous place to live in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n Home to around 40,000 people, the central Arkansas city sees 50 more crimes per square mile than the statewide average.\u00a0<\/p>\n 8. Little Rock, Arkansas<\/span><\/p>\n Just 40 miles north-west of Pine Bluff sits Americas eighth most violent city.\u00a0<\/p>\n Little Rock has 20.2 violent crimes per 1,000 population with a one in 49 chance of being a victim.\u00a0<\/p>\n 9. Alexandria, Louisiana<\/span><\/p>\n The northern Louisiana city of Alexandria has a violent crime rating of 18.8 per 1,000 residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n Residents in the Red River bank town have a one in 58 chance of becoming a victim.\u00a0<\/p>\n 10.
