Charlotte Hawkins made an unscheduled appearance on Wednesday's Good Morning Britain after she stepped in for Susanna Reid at the last minute.

Starting the show, Charlotte, 48, explained: "Good morning to you, this is a bit of an unscheduled appearance for me this morning!"

To which her co-host Ed Balls added: "I was about to say, you know, I came into the studio as usual about 4:30am. Walked past Susanna Reid's dressing room.

"There was Susanna, as always, in her white dressing gown, getting ready for the show to come. This feels like a bit of a change!"

Explaining what had happened, Charlotte continued: "The reason is because you saw Susanna there but we couldn't hear her because she has unfortunately lost her voice!"

Susanna then joined the broadcast via a video link, adding, rather croakingly: "I'm fine, I just can't speak!"

Asked what happened, Susanna replied: "I don't know! I don't know whether it was the heat, inflaming my vocal cords. It's funny because of course it was the NTAs last night and when I got my cab to leave, the driver said: 'You're the very first person to leave the NTAs, you're obviously not partying'.

"Of course, I don't drink, I don't smoke, so there's no reason I can understand why I've completely lost my voice."

Charlotte added that Susanna had been the first of the GMB presenters to head home from the awards, while she herself "didn't leave as early as I should have done."

It comes after fellow ITV morning show This Morning, lost out on the Best Daytime Show award, for the first time in 13 years, with BBC TV's The Repair Shop winning instead.

The shock over This Morning comes after a turbulent time for the popular ITV show and its star presenter Holly Willoughby and former co-presenter Phillip Schofield.

Earlier in the evening, Holly had exclusively opened up to OK! on the "difficult year" she's had on This Morning, admitting she has a "great team of people" around her, as she returned to the show yesterday.

Referring to the criticism of an alleged toxic culture within This Morning and ITV, she said:"I know there's been lots of reports about things and for me personally, you know, I don't want to speak on behalf of other people, but it's a world I honestly I don't recognise."

The TV presenter also addressed how "difficult" her year has been at times, but that people want things to "move on".
