A STAR from The Office has opened up about his traumatising childhood during a rare emotional interview.

A-List celebrity Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute in the US sitcom, shared that being abandoned by his mum as a toddler resulted in him experiencing mental health battles as an adult.

The 57-year-old spoke about the difficult details of his family life to Steven Bartlett on his podcast, The Diary of A CEO.

Rainn shared that he was raised by dad Robert G Wilson in the jungles of Nicaragua after his mum "took off" when he was one.

He referred to himself as an "abandoned toddler", saying the experience was "this weird gaslighting mind f***".

Eventually the pair moved to Seattle in the US, but Rainn's dad got into an unhappy second marriage that affected the actor badly.

He called his childhood home a "loveless shell", adding: "I experienced a lot of pain in my life and a lot of suffering with anxiety and depression and addiction.

"As I dove into recovery and the therapeutic process, I can pin that squarely on a lot of gross imbalances and trauma that I suffered as a child."

His mental health issues were ongoing as he played fan-favourite Dwight in The Office, leaving him angry and unable to appreciate his job.

"There were times where I really struggled. Here I was on the greatest job I could ever imagine but I was [angry] that I couldn’t get more movies, and [more] deals," Rainn sighed.
