Woman dies in hospital after suffering ‘medical episode’ in police custody

  • Woman, from Plymouth, was taken into custody at Charles Cross police station 
  • She suffered a ‘medical episode’ on July 3 and was rushed to Derriford Hospital 
  • Devon and Cornwall Police have said that the woman passed away on July 4

A woman who suffered a ‘medical episode’ while in police custody has died in hospital.

The woman, from Plymouth, Devon, was arrested and taken into custody at Charles Cross police station on July 3.

However she suffered a ‘medical episode’ later that afternoon and was administered emergency treatment from the health care practitioner, Devon and Cornwall Police reported.

The woman was rushed to Derriford Hospital in a serious but stable condition but later died on July 4.  

A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to the woman’s next of kin and enquiries led by Devon and Cornwall Police continue. 

A force spokesman said: ‘An ambulance attended and the woman was taken to the Derriford Hospital in a serious but stable condition; her next of kin were informed of this development.

‘Police have since been informed by Derriford that the woman was pronounced deceased late am on Saturday July 4.

‘A family liaison officer has been appointed. 

‘The force have informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as is mandatory in any case such as this and inquiries led by Devon and Cornwall Police continue.’
