Joe Biden details phone call about coronavirus with ‘very gracious’ Trump
Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden detailed what was discussed during his phone call with President Trump, saying his 2020 rival was “very gracious” during the talk.
Speaking to CNN Tuesday evening, the former Vice President said the two “had a good conversation.”
“I laid out what I thought he should be doing. I laid out four or five specific points that I thought were necessary. I indicated that it is about taking responsibility, and being the commander in chief, taking on the responsibility,” Biden told “Prime Time” host Chris Cuomo.
“He was very gracious in his conversation. So it was — the President — I had an opportunity to tell him what I would have done, what I thought, the lessons we learned.”
In another Tuesday interview, Biden told local network 6ABC’s “Action News” of the call, “He asked my views. I gave him four things that I thought were of urgent need that he should be doing, that they should be doing, the national government.”
“We both agreed we wouldn’t go into detail but we did acknowledge that we talked to one another and that if I had more suggestions, or if he wanted to call me, he could,” he continued.
Pressed by CNN’s Cuomo about whether he implored the commander-in-chief to do anything specific, the former Vice President said he suggested that Trump fully implement the Defense Production Act, appoint a commander to oversee the supply and distribution of goods and increase drug testing.
He also said he suggested that the president open up a new enrollment window for the Affordable Care Act, a signature achievement of the Obama-Biden administration.
Biden told Cuomo that Trump and him considered what they would tell the public of their talk.
“[Trump] asked whether or not we would not discuss the detail of what we talked about, just saying that we had a good conversation,” the Democratic frontrunner said.
After their call on Monday, Trump praised the conversation to reporters.
“We had a really wonderful, warm conversation. It was a very nice conversation,. We talked about pretty much this — this is what we talked about. This is what everyone’s talking about.”
The president said they spoke for about 15 minutes. “He gave me his point of view and I fully understood that. And we just had a very friendly conversation.”
