Asda on lockdown as three injured after 'axe-wielding' shopper threatens staff

AN ASDA store went into lockdown today after three people were injured when an 'axe-wielding' shopper threatened staff.

Terrified eye-witnesses claimed the man stormed into the supermarket in Glenrothes, Fife, "swinging an axe" after being told to leave earlier.

The supermarket was forced to temporarily close after three staff members were hurt during the incident at 9am.

Petrified shoppers were locked inside the store for their safety as security tried to apprehend the man.

He is said to have returned to the shop for a second time brandishing an axe after previously being asked to leave.

Shoppers told on social media of their terror as they were kept inside.

One woman said: "Being locked in Asda because of a mad man with an axe was not how I expected my morning to go! Crazy people."

Another added: "Just been in, we got locked in someone had axe and knife on them. Worlds crazy."

One eyewitness said the man threw a shopping trolley and baskets at staff, as well at at the entrance to the store, as security tried to calm him down.

Another shopper told the Courier she had been at the self-service checkout near the entrance doors when she heard a "very loud noise".

She added: "I saw a man come in the front door and he threw something into the shop – I can’t be sure what it was.

"By this time there was a big staff presence and he continued to throw stuff in the doors, like plants, and I believe he also picked up a trolley but I didn’t see if he threw this or not.

"I think the staff managed to get the doors closed, but then one of the members of staff said he was coming back with an axe.

"I was so shocked and disgusted at what had just happened, and I really felt for the poor staff who had to deal with such behaviour."

Customers who were in the store at the time have praised the quick-thinking Asda staff on social media.

One said: "Staff did brilliantly in Asda this morning to prevent something much worse from happening, hope they are recognised for what they did."

Another said: "Amazing reactions by staff at Asda Glenrothes this morning, put themselves at risk to prevent a situation that could have been much much worse than a few displays damaged, hope they’re rewarded accordingly by the company."

Police were called to the supermarket on Fullerton Road at around 9am.

Three employees are understood to have suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Some vehicles, including a police car, also appear to have been damaged.
