Who was Victoria’s gran Annie in Emmerdale?
Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) is in for some tragic news tonight on Emmerdale, as she’s due a call which will inform her that her grandmother Annie Sugden (Sheila Mercer) has passed away.
Marlon (Mark Charnock) and Bob (Tony Audenshaw) will try their hand at matchmaking for Victoria and Luke (Max Parker), but when Victoria finds out her gran is dead Marlon feels terrible for her.
Ahead of these scenes, here’s a quick reminder of who Annie was and who played her…
Who was Annie Sugden in Emmerdale?
Annie Sugden was a mainstay of Emmerdale, having appeared in the first ever episode back in 1972.
Born in 1920, the character’s main stint on the show was from 1972 until 1996.
She also appeared one last time in 2009 for her son Jack Sugden’s funeral and has been mentioned on the soap on a fairly regular basis ever since.
Actor Sheila Mercer, who played Annie during all the character’s years in Emmerdale, died last year aged 100.
An Emmerdale spokesperson said at the time: ‘It’s always sad to hear of the death of an actor who played a significant part in Emmerdale’s success.
‘Even more so when that actor was in the very first episode and around whose family the show was built.
‘Annie Sugden embodied all the virtues of Yorkshire – she was hard-working, resilient, determined, down to earth and didn’t suffer fools gladly.
‘Sheila had many of those qualities too, putting the needs of the programme above her own and always delivering a great performance come rain or shine. She will be greatly missed.’
Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
