This Morning viewers divided as MP Dawn Butler rages over police race row
This Morning viewers let rip today after Labour MP Dawn Butler appeared on the hit ITV show.
The politician claimed she was racially profiled by the MET police over the weekend after the car she was travelling in was stopped by the police.
Explaining her position to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, Dawn said: "This isn't a new debate this has been going on for many many years.
"Imagine if every time you have gone out of your house you have to remember to have ID and a driving licence because of the colour of your skin you are scared that you are going to be stopped.
"We need to find a system that works and remove the institutional racism that exists."
Dawn added: "I am not calling all the police racist.
"If the system has that built into it you are just doing what the system is saying."
Trying to remain impartial, Eamonn replied: "I totally empathised with where it happens and why it happens but two days on and you have created such stir, what do think you have achieved if anything?"
Standing her ground, Dawn continued: "I am glad we are having the debate about how black people are over policed.
"I have achieved that we are going to meet with the police and we are going to try to find a system that works for everyone.

"We don't want groups of people being over policed."
Dawn's comments triggered a strong response from people online.

Another added: "How is this anything to do with race? What a ridiculous argument #ThisMorning"
"What a waste of time – get lost Dawn #ThisMorning," a third moaned.
However, others were supportive of Dawn's argument.
"You’ll never understand love because you aren’t a person of colour. End of," one viewer insisted.
Another agreed: "Why do you get pulled over because your car isn't registered in the area you're driving in?
'Since when has it been a crime to travel in a car?"
Dawn is set to meet Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service Cressida Dick later this week to debate the potential problems with the system.
This Morning continues tomorrow at 10am on ITV.
