Chaser Shaun, also known as “The Dark Destroyer” admitted that it would only take one ITV executive to cancel The Chase. Stars are worried the future of the quiz show would be at risk if channel bosses were to change, and said they never take the show’s success for granted.
Favourite Shaun said: “With everybody, including our host Bradley Walsh, the one thing we never do is take the show for granted.
“It only takes the wrong ITV executive to say, ‘Look, it’s run its course and it’s gone.’ That is what keeps the show fresh.”
“We don’t take things for granted,” he told The Daily Star.
The 60-year-old added members of the show are treated as “a happy family”, with all of them respecting each other.
The programme, hosted by Bradley Walsh, sees players try to keep one step ahead of the genius quizzers: Shaun, Mark Labbett, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha and Jenny Ryan.
Since first coming onto screens in 2009, it has become a favourite, with viewers enjoying the quick-style questions and watching contestants battle it out with the experts.
Chasers, with their own personalities on display, are also popular with fans, with Anne taking part in ITV’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2018.
And Paul “The Sinnerman” launched a new show in January, Paul Sinha’s TV Showdown.
Shaun recently admitted he is also eyeing a role on BBC’s Mastermind, which he won in 2004 as a contestant.
With Mastermind’s John Humphrys stepping down from presenting the hit quiz show after 18 years, it is not yet known who will replace him.
But Shaun has revealed he would enjoy the role of Mastermind host.
Speaking to Simon Gross, he said “it would be a great story” if he were to become host after starting out on the show as a contestant and going on to becoming champion in 2004.

Simon said: “I must ask you about Mastermind. There’s something I wanted to ask you. So, they are going to be casting a new host I’ve heard, and it’s been mentioned in the press that it could be you.”
“Then, I’ve heard it might be Anne [Hegerty, fellow Chaser]. Can you give us a little teaser or anything?” he pressed.
Shaun insisted he doesn’t know if he will be asked: “I wish I knew – I really wish I knew, but who knows?”
When asked if he’d like to do it, Shaun said: “You know, it would make a fantastic story, wouldn’t it?
“You know, a former contestant, former champion, then suddenly turns out to be a host.”
Viewers would no doubt be upset to see the end of The Chase, and will hope ITV continues with the programme.
With 14 previous series’, it would certainly leave a gap in quizzing TV if it were taken off air, but it seems to be something The Chase team have in their mind.
The Chase airs on ITV on weekdays at 5pm.
