Superstore Is Officially Ending After Season 6

The beloved NBC sitcom Superstore is officially coming to an end. The sixth season will be the show’s last, and the workplace comedy will end after 113 episodes. Superstore is currently on hiatus until Jan. 14, 2021. When it returns, there will be 11 episodes left.

What executive producers have to say about ‘Superstore’ ending

Superstore was created by Justin Spitzer, who previously worked as a writer on NBC’s The Office. When the show’s cancellation was announced, Spitzer and fellow executive producers Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green issued a statement.

“We’re grateful to Universal Television and NBC for letting us make 113 episodes of a show we’re so proud of, and for giving us the chance to work with such an incredibly talented group of actors, writers and crew,” said the executive producers.

They continued, “We’re thankful most of all to the viewers who’ve stuck with us for the past six years (or discovered us somewhere along the way). We’ll do our best to go out strong and give you the satisfying ending you deserve.”

‘Superstore’ was an important show on TV

The workplace comedy was often known for being underrated. The show frequently explored social issues including gun control, unions, and immigration reform. It has had solid and consistent ratings, and according to NBC, the show was seen by 37 million viewers in its fifth season.

Superstore has always been a signature NBC series that has never failed to make us laugh while also thoughtfully examining important issues people care deeply about,” Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, said in a statement. “This has been an amazing group of writers, producers, actors and crew to work with and we are incredibly grateful for all their contributions. This show will forever hold its place among the top workplace comedies for which we have a cherished history.”

Universal Television President Erin Underhill also released a statement about the show’s impact, saying:

“We are incredibly proud of this show and the stories we were able to tell within the walls of Cloud 9. We want to thank Justin Spitzer, who created this show, current showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller, all the writers, cast and crew. Not only did they bring us a comedy full of heart and humor, but Superstore also became one of the most socially impactful series on television.”

America Ferrera recently left the show

Superstore currently stars Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Bloom, Kaliko Kauahi, and Mark McKinney. The news of Superstore ending follows America Ferrera departing the show.

Ferrera starred as Amy Sosa, and she announced that she planned to leave the show after its fifth season. Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, her departure from the show was delayed until the start of the sixth season.

Ferrera stayed on for the first two episodes of Season 6 of Superstore to finish Amy’s storyline. As part of the character’s arc, Amy left Cloud 9 for a corporate job with Zephra in California, resulting in her breakup with Jonah Simms (Feldman).
