Netflix’s award-winning horror series Stranger Things made its highly anticipated return to screens in May, with an entirely new villain for the Hawkins teenagers to take on. Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour) also made a surprise appearance and the actor revealed why he underwent a major transformation for the role.

Many fans were left concerned for Hopper’s fate after season three came to a devastating end back in 2019.

Thankfully for fans, the beloved character returned to screens despite fears he had been killed.

In season three, Hopper and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) placed a bomb near a machine to close the portal once and for all.

However, a Russian hitman Grigori (Andrey Ivchenko), interrupted Hopper which led to a full-on fist fight.

Although he defeated the hitman, Hopper found himself in a dangerous position as he was trapped.

As a result, fans were convinced he had died in the blast in an effort to protect his loved ones.

However, in season four, Harbour reprised his role as Hopper and surprised the audience with an appearance after it was revealed he was actually alive in a Russian prison.

Although the actor was sporting a much trimmer frame, Harbour revealed how he was able to film the flashback scenes.

A post shared by David Harbour (@dkharbour)

Taking to Instagram, the 46-year-old posted a behind the scenes photo of himself in the hair and makeup chair, with a fuller face.

In the caption, he wrote: “At the end of s3 I told those Duffer bros that we should shoot the flashbacks post ‘death’ cause I was going to lose the weight and there’d be continuity issues.

“But they hadn’t been written yet, luckily, we had the miraculous @barriegower come in and give me the ‘fuller hopper’ face.”

The actor added: “The results speak for themselves, shoutout to @amylforsythe as well who has been our makeup dept head since s1, for augmenting, overseeing and being all around generous with the process.

“And the talented hair chief @sarahhindsgaul who sat down with our gulag ‘barber’ and tested and tested and made sure we could shave my real hair cleanly and theatrically efficiently to catch on camera. We only had one shot at it.”

Speaking to Page Six, Harbour revealed Stranger Things season four was a major motivator for his weight loss.

As his character has been in a Russian prison, Harbour had to trim down to make himself look like a convincing gulag inmate.

However, as there were going to be flashback scenes, he used prosthetics to replicate his fuller face from past instalments.

Fans were impressed and took to his comments to express their amazement.

This included one viewer who wrote: “HOLY SH- THOSE WERE JUST PROSTHETICS???? I thought the flashback scene was already filmed before, and they just saved it for Season 4.”

An amazed @bestofharbour added: “I was impressed to find out that it was makeup, a stupendous job!”

Stranger Things is available on Netflix.
