Royal biographer says Princess Diana would see Meghan Markle as fellow spirit

Andrew Morton has revealed that he thinks that Princess Diana, who would have turned 60 on July 1, would have seen Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex as a “fellow spirit” as they both supposedly had a similar experience while part of the Royal Family

Andrew, who knew the late royal well, also said that Diana, like Meghan, was accused of “ruling the roost” at Buckingham Palace but in actual fact, both women claimed to have been bullied themselves.

Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris aged just 36 back in 1997, was also subject to intense media scrutiny, like Meghan.

Speaking on Loose Women ahead of the unveiling of a special statue to mark Princess Diana’s 60th birthday, Andrew said: “There are endless stories about Meghan… Diana would see a fellow spirit.

"After just a few months inside the Royal Family herself, Diana, who was not bi-racial or divorced or American, she was part of the aristocracy… she was being called a fiend and a monster by the newspapers."

Andrew, 68, also said that the pair’s experience of being royal wives had a “remarkable symmetry”.

He added: “At that time he was just trying to survive. Fast forward to Meghan’s years and she too was struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, just like Diana.”

Andrew is also the author of biographies of high profile stars such as Tom Cruise, Madonna, Angelina Jolie and Monica Lewinsky.

He went on to say that Diana would have been a “glam-ma” (glamorous grandma) and would have “been fighting Carole Middleton for those weekends away” with the grandchildren.

Andrew joked: “She wouldn’t have let her [Carole] have all the fun.”

He also predicted that Diana would have been “terribly upset” at the feud that has developed between Harry and William.

Andrew said: “She said to me, she saw Harry as a wingman for William, so, and knowing their personalities, she would be working out with Charles a way of reconciling them.

“She had a great connectivity about her but I used to remember her sense of humour, she never took herself too seriously and had a light touch.”
