Ozark will be coming back for one last outing on Netflix. Season four will be the final onne for the show which has been critically-acclaimed and will finish with an extra-long final run comprised of 14 episodes. Express.co.uk looks at why multi-Emmy Award-winning series Ozark is coming to an end.

Why has Ozark been cancelled?

Ozark fans received bitter-sweet news yesterday (June 30) after Netflix confirmed the show had been greenlit for season four.

Additionally, the next series would be the longest run yet with a further four episodes on top of the usual 10 instalments.

Sadly, Netflix also revealed this would be the last cycle for Ozark.

Season four will be split in half – like Lucifer – with the first seven episodes dropping on the platform at once.

Then, the second block of seven episodes will be released later and round off the series.

Ozark’s Twitter account confirmed the news with a post, which read: “They’re going to go out with a bang.

“Ozark will be back with an expanded 14-episode final season.”

Among the cast members to be returning will be Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, Laura Linney as Wendy Byrde, Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore, Sofia Hublitz as Charlotte Byrde and Skylar Gaertner as Jonah Byrde, Deadline reported.

Further cast members include Charlie Tahan as Wyatt Langmore and Lisa Emery as Darlene Snell.

Chris Mundy will again be serving as showrunner as Ozark prepares to bow out.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for the show ending, but given the success of the third outing, the creators may have wanted to go out on a high.

Mundy said of the renewal: “A super-sized season means super-sized problems for the Byrdes. I’m excited to end with a bang(s).”

He added: “We’re so happy Netflix recognized the importance of giving Ozark more time to end the Byrdes’ saga right.

“It’s been such a great adventure for all of us — both on screen and off — so we’re thrilled to get the chance to bring it home in the most fulfilling way possible.”

While Netflix executive Cindy Holland commented: “Ozark is a gripping drama that has captivated audiences all around the world and garnered tremendous critical acclaim.

“We’re so grateful to Chris, Jason, Laura, Julia and the entire cast and crew for all their tireless dedication to the show and can’t wait to see how the Byrdes’ journey comes to a close.”

There’s already been speculation about how it could all end for the Byrdes with all of them potentially getting wiped out in a massacre.

Some fans are wondering if Wendy made a huge mistake by killing off her brother Ben and if it could come back to haunt her.

Although the news may come as a shock to some fans, Mundy previously spoke about the future of the series.

He told The Hollywood Reporter how he was considering a five-season arc, which would fit with this decision to have a fourth outing split in half.

Mundy told the publication: “We’ve always talked about it as five seasons.

“It could be four, it could be seven… but that always seemed like a good number to us.”
