Outlander may have a few more seasons to catch up with the books but fans can already see the end of the series in sight. Due to this, some viewers have even started speculating about how it will all be brought to a close in the show. One theory suggests the series might head back to its beginning in its end moments – here’s what you need to know about this.

Will Outlander end with a time travel loop?

Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) have been star-crossed lovers over five seasons of the show so far.

The pair have been through several ups and downs, having to part ways for several years as well.

Now they’re finally back together and building their life together in North Carolina, some have been worried about whether anything might break them up again.

As a result, many have been speculating about what kind of ending the time-travelling series could finish with.

What has been confirmed about the end of both the book series and the show so far is it will involve Jamie’s ghost in some way.

Author Diana Gabaldon has confirmed this as fans have been confused since the first episode about how Jamie appeared outside of Claire’s window.

Speaking to Express.co.uk earlier this year, she said: “It will be the last thing in the last book.

“I expect to leave them [readers] in floods of tears but you know feeling happy nevertheless.”

The idea of a bittersweet happy ending has left many worried about whether one or both of the characters could die.

Posting on Reddit, one fan had an idea about how time travel might play into what happens.

This is based on the idea of when you travel in time, different timelines are created.

There is still a lot unknown about time travel in Outlander, so it is possible this could be explored further.

User starfleetdropout6 explained: “Many think that they’re repeating an endless loop.

“I’m not sure if that excites or depresses me – it creates possibilities, though.

“If so, I like to think that every time she goes through, the sequence of events varies.

“Sometimes they stop the uprising, or they actually win at Culloden and get a happily ever after at Lallybroch.

“The books are just one version of events. Well, this is my headcanon and I’m sticking to it.”

Another fan agreed with the idea as it fits in with when Jamie promises Claire he will find her soul again when they part through the stones.

User velvejabbress added: “For myself, the explanation is quite simple.

“He told her he would love her forever, and that his ghost would find her in her own time.

“He basically told her he would come, and he did, because he doesn’t make promises he can’t keep.”

The theory is quite a complicated one to get your heads around but it could make for an interesting twist in the finale.

For now, it seems fans will just have to keep waiting and see how it all turns out.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon’s Prime Video now.
