The fifth season of Outlander concluded in May last year on Starz and Amazon Prime Video. This series was originally meant to start in late 2019 but had to be pushed back so only started in February 2020. But what of the time-travelling drama’s future?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander season 5.

Fans saw Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) disappear in season five so naturally, everyone was wondering where she went.

Concerned for her welfare, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) gathered some support from his peers to start a search party.

But viewers soon found out what had happened thanks to the season finale’s trailer.

Claire had been kidnapped by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and sadly went through a horrific ordeal of being beaten up and sexually assaulted by her captors.

Jamie did eventually find her and killed the men responsible but how is Claire going to deal with what happened to her?

Will there be another series?

There is no need to be concerned about the future of Outlander, fans will be relieved to know.

Outlander has already been renewed for a sixth season and will therefore return with new episodes.

The drama actually received a double renewal in 2018 so was announced at the same time as series five.

Now fans have been given more of an idea as to when it will be ready to watch.

There has been a major gap between seasons five and six, caused by the coronavirus pandemic which postponed filming.

However, this is no longer the case with filming expected to wrap up this week on season six.

More importantly, it has been confirmed that series six will begin sometime in early 2022.

While there is still quite a while to wait for the new episodes, showrunner Matthew B Roberts has provided some more welcomed news

Roberts gave Entertainment Weekly an insight into the seventh series as well.

He said: “We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge.

“Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.

“Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

But before everyone can even start thinking about series seven, there is still the sixth season to look forward to.

Series six will be one of the shortest seasons yet with just eight episodes, compared to the 12 in season five.

The drama is going to debut next year and will include a special 90-minute premiere.

The series is based on the sxith book by Diana Gabaldon called A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

Outlander season 5 is available to watch on Starz.
