'Outlander' Season 5 Spoiler: Why Fans Are Sure Roger Is Alive and Well

Outlander just left Roger MacKenzie’s (Richard Rankin) life hanging in the balance. In “The Ballad of Roger Mac,” Jamie (Sam Heughan) finds himself at war with his godfather, Murtagh (Duncan LaCroix). But at the end of the episode, Roger has gone missing, and it has the Fraser’s fearing the worst.

[Spoiler alert: Spoilers for Outlander, season 5, episode 7.]

The Revolutionary War has arrived on ‘Outlander’

Since season 4, Outlander has been setting up the arrival of the American Revolutionary War. Last season, Jamie made a deal with Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) to take a large lot of land (now called Fraser’s Ridge) in exchange for his loyalty and service to the crown.

Being from the future, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) knows that the war is coming. And she warns Jamie that the Red Coats will lose against the revolutionaries. However, because his entire family and friends live on Fraser’s Ridge, Jamie is staying true to his deal with Tryon to keep them safe.

But now the war has arrived. Murtagh went off on his own and joined the rebel cause. He became the leader of the Regulators and attacked numerous Red Coats and crown loyalists.

His actions landed him in the crosshairs of Tryon, and in episode 7 battle, he is shot in the chest.

What happened to Roger?

At the end of the episode, when the Fraser’s go looking for Roger, he’s nowhere to be found. They then spot a hooded figure hanging from a tree, and they think that it might be Roger.

Brianna (Sophie Skelton) thinks that he was mistaken for a traitor and killed. Later, in a trailer for the next episode, she is seen telling Jamie and Claire that she just wants Roger back.

The episode left fans with a heart-wrenching cliffhanger, but many are sure that Roger is alive and well. Some Outlander fans believe that the body hanging is Morag MacKenzie’s (Elysia Welch) husband Buck. When Roger was knocked out, some think Buck took his jacket and put it on to fight.

“Not a book reader, but I can’t imagine Roger is actually dead,” wrote a Reddit fan. “It was probably his Mackenzie ancestor bro who took his jacket. Otherwise, they would have shown his face then and there.”

Another user noted that the show didn’t reveal Roger’s face.  “They did knock him out before the battle, could be Roger is still passed out in the woods minus his stolen jacket,” the Reddit fan wrote. “Seems convenient they don’t show what happened and then don’t show the hanged guy’s face.”

Major spoiler here… Those who’ve read Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books know that Roger actually doesn’t die here. However, the Starz series has taken creative liberties with many characters and storylines, so Roger’s fate is still really up in the air.

Fans will just have to wait and watch through the season to see if this beloved character is truly dead, or if he managed to survive.
