Next Bond – New favourite blasts Henry Cavill off top spot
Argylle: Henry Cavill stars in teaser from Apple TV+
For so long it seemed as if Henry Cavill was on course to the next James Bond.
The only thing in the way was his, ahem, high-flying day job as Superman and a starring role in Netflix smash hit The Witcher.
But then both roles suddenly disappeared as James Gunn’s new reign over the Warner Bros DC universe initiated seismic changed in the franchise and then Cavill sensationally quit The Witcher.
However, there are two major new obstacles to him slipping into 007’s iconic tuxedo and one may be impossible to circumvent.
The latest odds from UK bookies also indicate the tide is turning against the strapping star.
‘Idiot’ Burt Reynolds rejected two biggest film roles in movie history (including a certain MI6 spy)
For the past two years, Cavill has been the dominant front-runner in the Hollywood derby to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond – but it seems increasingly unlikely he will be first past the post after all.
Numerous casting reports have leaked that production company EON will be looking for actors under 40, with a view to someone playing the role for a projected 10-15 years.
Cavill turned 40 earlier this year and official word from Barbara Broccoli is that they have not yet formally started the casting process and still have no script or story plans in place. So it is highly unlikely that the next 007 film will go into production and hit cinemas within the next 18 months.
After dominating the race for so long, Cavill has suddenly dropped to third position with leading UK bookie Coral.
The latest odds start at 2-1 for Aaron Taylor-Johnson, followed by 5-2 for James Norton and then 3-1 for Henry Cavill.
These three actors remain clear out front, followed by 7-1 for Tom Hardy and Richard Madden, 8-1 for Rege-Jean Page and 10-1 for Jack Lowden. Former hot favourite Idris Elba slips ever further out of contention on 14-1.
Spokesman John Hill told Express Online: “There has been a surge of support behind Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the last 24 hours in our next James Bond betting. It’s clear that punters have made their minds up over who they think should replace Daniel Craig.”
