After banishing himself to Hell in the previous season, Lucifer’s friends face a new challenge in the form of his twin brother Michael. Ahead of the new release on Netflix, fans of the original Fox series have been trawling through the new trailer and may have discovered a major spoiler.

Following the shocking events of season four, Lucifer Morningstar (played by Tom Ellis) finds himself stuck in the underworld once again.

As the new ruler of Hell, Lucifer has abandoned his friends and family on Earth after admitting his love for his detective partner Chloe Decker (Lauren German).

A brand new teaser trailer has confirmed Lucifer’s absence has left Chloe, Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) and Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) vulnerable to new threats.

For the first half of season eight, Lucifer must find a way to escape Hell and take down his own twin brother, Michael.

Posing as his identical twin, Michael takes advantage of Lucifer’s luxurious life on Earth and even starts a steamy and dishonest affair with Chloe.

‘Deckerstar’ fans will finally get the romantic action they’ve been waiting for, but with a devilishly dark twist.

However, some perceptive viewers have suggested there may be more to Michael than what has been revealed in the new trailer.

The new footage confirms Lucifer eventually makes it back to Earth to face off against his brother, but some strange hidden details have caused some confusion.

One fan took to Reddit to point out some clues which could blow the first half of season five wide open.

Redditor babi134666 posted: “In the first scene where ‘Lucifer’ appears, when he whistles the ‘crime solving devil’ song, he was wearing the same suit he wore when we went to hell in season four.”

During a self-aware moment in season two, Lucifer pokes fun at the show’s ridiculous premise by playing Chloe a ‘crime solving devil’ theme song.

However, if fans are to believe it’s actually Michael whistling the song the trailer raises the question of where he picked up the tune.

The fan added: “The crime solving devil song is very specific, how would Michael know about it? Is it possible that in this scene the ‘Lucifer’ we see is in fact Lucifer himself.”

Moreover, the new trailer reminds viewers time works very differently in the underworld and Lucifer is likely to emerge incredibly different when he eventually escapes.

Could Lucifer be attempting to hide his new persona by temporarily stealing the identity of his darker twin brother?

Things get more complicated when the same poster spotted a baffling injury detail later in the trailer.

They continued: “There are two bullet wounds on his chest. In the scene with Chloe he probably got shot or something since they were with a guy with a gun.

“But this would mean that that ‘Lucifer’ we see (in the scene with Chloe) is in fact Michael (because Lucifer is vulnerable around Chloe).

Either the new teaser trailer is packed with misdirects, or ‘Lucifans’ could be onto something and Lucifer/Michael could have a complicated scheme up their sleeve.

Lucifer Season 4 Part 1 will be released August 21 on Netflix.
