Love Island ‘will be reviewed’ after series hit with over 5k Ofcom complaints, says ITV boss
Love Island will be reviewed following the large number of Ofcom complaints received this series, an ITV boss has confirmed.
While the latest series of the ITV2 show has seen record-high numbers of viewers tuning in, a number fans have also contacted the broadcasting watchdog to lodge complaints about various scenes and Islander interactions.
Over 5,000 Ofcom complaints have been filed in the last two weeks, many in relation to the boys’ behaviour in the villa, which has been labelled as “bullying” and “misogynistic”.
Contestant Luca Bish, 23, has also received backlash following his treatment of partner Gemma Owen, with some claiming he's been “controlling”.
ITV boss Kevin Lygo addressed the extent of complaints Love Island has faced these past few days as he explained the action the broadcaster will be taking.
Speaking in a media briefing for ITV’s interim financial results, Mr Lygo mentioned said although he is “very happy” with the success of the latest series of Love Island, there will be a “review” once it ends on Monday 1 August.
My Lygo said: “We continually assess a programme as it is going on because it is one of these odd every night live sort of shows.
“But when the series comes to an end on Monday, we will always sit down and review what we think about it, what the reaction has been, how well it has done.
“And we have to say this year, remember, it is the best one we have had in many years and I think everyone is thoroughly enjoying it.”
He then added: “To get five million people to watch a show every night at 9 o’clock is extraordinary in the modern era, so something is being done right.
“But you are right, we must always look to improve and work on what we have done. But we are very happy with the way it has gone so far.”
The complaints the show received via Ofcom poured in after the Snog, Marry, Pie challenge and Movie Night earlier this month, as the boys were accused of mistreating the ladies, in particular Tasha Ghouri.
Tasha, 23, was left in tears after being pied by Davide Sanclimenti, Luca, and Dami Hope in the challenge, and Luca and Dami later apologised for their actions.
