Kate Garraway shares excitement at possibly finally seeing husband Derek

Kate Garraway has shared her excitement on Good Morning Britain at finally being able to see husband Derek Draper after three months in hospital.

The newscaster’s husband has been fighting for his life in hospital since March after contracting coronavirus, remaining in a coma for most of that time.

With strict guidelines in hospitals preventing anyone non-essential from being there, Kate and her children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10, haven’t been able to see him.

However, with lockdown rules lightening, Kate revealed today she may finally be able to see her husband of 15 years.

She told co-star and pal Ben Shepherd: ‘I might be able to go and visit Derek today!’

‘In fact the nurses are going to put GMB on for him – they have a TV – and they’re going to put it on for him this morning,’ she continued.

‘They forgot I was on yesterday – they’re going to see if he can hear anything.’

Ben asked if hearing her could help stimulate a reaction from Derek, who remains in an almost completely comatose state.

Kate said yes, and added they were ‘trying everything we can do.’

The smiley presenter made a triumphant return to GMB on Monday, despite one or two glitches kicking off the show.

Taking to Instagram afterwards, Kate thanked fans for their continued well wishes, and said: ‘Well I survived my 1st day back without crashing the show thanks to the brilliant [Ben Shephard], the whole wonderful [GMB] team & all of YOUR patience!!’

‘Thanks so much for your incredibly kind messages. Means such a lot,’ she added.

‘Derek had a stable day too so [praying].’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
