I’m A Celeb Shaun Ryder’s in 10-year US ban after being surrounded by police

I’m A Celeb star Shaun Ryder revealed he was once “banned from America for 10 years” – with bandmate Bez claiming the pair found themselves “surrounded by police".

The 60-year-old Happy Mondays star is back on TV screens as part of the new spin-off series of I’m A Celebrity… South Africa.

The ITV show kicked off on Monday (April 24) and it’s delivered plenty of jaw-dropping and shocking scenes so far – including the first eating trial of the series.

But in Tuesday’s episode (April 25) Shaun revealed he was once banned for 10 years from going to America following a rather dramatic incident.

In the show, the Gogglebox star was paired with fellow campmate Gillian McKeith to take on a challenge to try and win a treat to take back to the camp.

In the task, the two had to match countries to phone codes and as the pair got to work, Shaun started to reminisce about his touring days.

He said: “You don’t remember lots of it because it’s all sex, drugs and rocky road. I got banned from the United States for 10 years and I had to go and settle in Cuba."

Although Shaun didn’t elaborate or explain why he was reportedly banned from the US, Daily Star has taken a deep dive to try and find it out.

Following his days as part of Happy Mondays, Shaun formed a new band, Black Grape, in 1993 with former bandmate Mark Berry aka Bez.

The two toured the world – and one time they headed to New York’s Central Park to smoke weed before one of their gigs.

And while nowadays, adults in New York can possess up to three ounces of cannabis and smoke it wherever you’re allowed to smoke tobacco in the city, back then things were slightly different.

Speaking to The Guardian earlier this year, Bez revealed the band was kicked out of the States by the immigration authorities.

He told the publication: “One minute we were sitting in Central Park taking in the smoke with a beautiful view of the Twin Towers – the next we were surrounded by police. I found the whole thing quite funny.”

Forced to leave the Big Apple, the band jetted off on a plane to Cuba.

“Cuba had just opened up to the west again… and it was like walking through a war zone," he recalled.

“In the end we were banned from America, so the press had to come to Cuba to interview us.”

Bez didn’t specify the year that this incident allegedly took place.

The all stars series of the hit ITV show kicked off on Monday and it saw the likes of Countdown star Carol Vorderman and Corrie stunner Helen Flanagan take to the jungle.

But Happy Mondays singer Shaun left fans gasping when he rocked up to camp with a pair of shades, and admitted he had to wear them as he had no eyelashes.

The 60-year-old was keen to tell his co-stars like former boxer Amir Khan that he wasn't a "tw**" that wore sunglasses for the sake of it.

He said: "I'm not a tw** wearing sunglasses when it's dark. I've got no eyelashes, so all the sh** gets in my eyes."

But Amir reassured him with a pat on the shoulder, telling the singer: "Oh, don't worry!"

However, Carol seemed shocked as she asked: "What?!"
