Emmerdales Jai Sharma actor pays tribute to ITV co-star loved by everyone

Emmerdale: Chris Bisson praises work of Bhasker Patel

Chris Bisson, who plays Jai Sharma on Emmerdale, has paid tribute to his longtime co-star Bhasker Patel, who portrays Rishi Sharma.

Bhasker and Chris appeared on Friday’s instalment of Lorraine to discuss Rishi’s exit from the ITV soap after being part of the cast for the past 12 years.

Chris confirmed tonight’s (Friday, July 28) episode of Emmerdale is “very emotional” as his character discovers Rishi dead.

Reflecting on his time working alongside Bhasker, Chris said: “I will miss Bhasker, he’s always smiling and he is a cheery cast member and he is loved by everyone.”

Bhasker added: “[Chris] is a cheeky one during filming, he always makes me laugh and even in serious scenes and serious storylines sometimes I would see a glint and think, ‘Please don’t do it.'”

The actors also opened up about the reaction from Emmerdale fans to Rishi’s death after was seen dead at the bottom of his stairs.

Bhasker said: “I didn’t see the episode last night as I was at the theatre but as soon as I’d finished I went on social media and it was mayhem, wasn’t it?”

Recalling the moment he found out his character was going to be killed off, the actor said: “Well it’s been 12 years and I have been a working actor since 1980.

“Getting a job like this was a godsend and then the producer rang me and said, ‘We are killing you off. We want you to have a big storyline.'”

He continued: “When producers said they were going to kill me off I was like, ‘OK, that part of my life is over and I am going to move on.'”

Jai recently discovered Rishi’s brother is his biological father after learning he was adopted earlier this summer.

He’d been annoyed at Rishi for weeks in the build-up to his wedding to Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) which aired in Thursday’s episode.

Jai gave a heartfelt speech about Rishi to the wedding party as he was absent from the special occasion.

He said: “We’ve had our ups and downs, me and him lately, but that’s daft isn’t it, because life is too short. First chance I get I’m going to tell him how much he means to me.”

Viewers were left heartbroken as Jai never got to make up with Rishi who had fallen to his death.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
